    Time to change it up

We have 20 acres on our lease that is across the county road from our main property. We have never hunted it in 5 years because we never wanted to put another set up on it and it has an old cellar on it that is probably full of Rattle snakes.. Well after sitting every morning but one since the season started, I decided to try something new since I have not seen a deer that I would pull the trigger on yet after seeing at least 15 different bucks and lots of does. I decided to try rattling on the 20 acres across the road after I sat till 9 this morning. Wind was good and calm so deer could hear the horn rattling. Picked out my spot and went thru 2 sessions and almost gave up and then a beautiful heavy, chocolate 9 point mature deer came over the crown of the hill @ 80 yards and stopped @ 70 yards. One problem with hunting 20 acres is it is only 200 yards deep. I put my crosshairs on the buck and the only thing that was keeping me from pulling the trigger was the 5 strands of barb wire he stood behind. He walked down the fence for 30 yards and finally left after not seeing any deer. He bought it hook, line and sinker but would not jump the fence. Had another buck come down wind and busted me. As I was leaving, I jumped 2 bucks with a doe. There were also 2 big rubs on 2 big mesquites on our side of the fence. I`m headed back this afternoon while the wind is still good and sitting by a small tank under a tree old school. Haven`t done that in 30 years. I always knew the 20 acres was probably a honey hole but there an old homestead from the 1800`s on it with a cellar that is caved in. I`m not gonna fight the snakes for a deer, but it finally got cold enough to risk it.

Get him. Hopefully all of the snakes are sleeping!

Hunt with your back to the fence and you won’t be tempted

            Don't tell your lease mates.

…how scared of snakes you are. They’ll giggle.

                    Don’t burn out the spot.

                    Good luck

My luck I'd go back to the same spot and not see a **** thing.

That is exactly what happened. Sat on the ground "old school" for 3 hours and never saw anything. I knew that might happen since there are no feeders on the place. Brought back lots of memories of when and how me and everyone else hunted 45 years ago. Sitting on the ground or in a tree without a feeder. The hardest thing about it was getting up off the ground after 3 hours. Next time I`m taking a chair. I had a blast though.
