    Panhandle Whitetail/Mule deer Hybrid?

I know it probably just a whitetail that seems to look similar to a mule deer, but wanted some other opinions.

The first time I saw this deer was in person and actually at about 2 yards away. At first I instantly thought he was a mule deer. He ended up busting me and when he "ran" off it seemed more of a mule deer "hop" if you will. After the hunt I looked to see the game camera pics of him and realized that it was a whitetail.

The next day I sat out and he followed in 9 does right before the end of shooting light and got an arrow in him a little farther back that I would have liked it to be.

Anyways, after getting him back to the house me and my roommates were looking at the deer and realized how much it resembled a mule deer by the short to no browtines and the way the main beams swoop out like a mule deer. Also, I sent the picture to one of my cousins who mentioned the same thing before I could even say anything. Plus, at this spot there are plenty of mule deer and whitetail, so I figured it was possible. Also, this deer weighed right at 227 pounds, which is by far the heaviest whitetail I have ever killed. I know whitetail come in many shapes and sizes, but was curious on what everyone else had to say about it.

This is my first post, so hopefully the pictures come out alright and I submitted this is the correct group.

Awesome buck! If you just showed a pic of the skull cap I would have thought for sure that was a Muley.

100% Whitetail. Congrats! I know it happens but rarley. I've hunted panhandle and West Texas and have never seen one.

Looks like a whitetail to me. I was with a buddy that killed a true hybrid years ago by Clarendon. Biologist confirmed. Pretty sure it had to be tagged as a muley.

Sorry, I don’t see any muley in him. Did he act like one? You catch him hopping? I have seen what I believe was a hybrid out at Matador once. Looked mostly Whitetail but acted muley. Had the big ears but the white flag. Hopped away after staring at us for a while. Congrats on the buck though.

In the town I live in, a man who owned a bar b que place had a lease in west Texas. He had at least 2 mounts of hybrids in the restaurant that he had killed.

Supposedly, the metatarsal gland on a hybrid is 4” long.
That deer’s looks like a normal WT gland.

Yep 100% whitetail. Racks are a poor indicator. I have hunted all my life in counties with both WT and MD and have only seen one true hybrid

Just a crab claw 8pt whitetail. Nothing muley about him.
