    Show goat issue/question

My daughter just started showing goats this year. We are now got or second goat for the county show. Needless to say we have this new goat that did have a 2 finger umbilical hernia which had been fixed by vet about 2 weeks ago. It healed up pretty good, but yesterday noticed it is starting to bulge out again but looks bigger this time. No fever but obviously soar when touched. I'm thinking maybe an infection but not sure. We are still rookies at this and hoping someone out there might have some advice.

We do have a call into the vet but waiting to hear back.

Been raising goats for over 20 years. Never seen, heard of, or had that issue. Sorry I'm no help, but good luck to y'all.

I'm no help on the solution to this goat, but when is y'alls show and validation (assuming y'all have 1)? Depending on the answer from the vet, my plan 'B' (which would be high on the list) would be start shopping for a replacement goat (again assuming validation hasn't already past). My kid and several of our friends kids show (pigs, goats, lambs, steers, etc) There is nothing more of a PIA than trying to doctor these animals the entire time you're trying to raise em. Not only that, but can get even more expensive and if the animal isn't 100% healed/healthy it isn't going to be worth a **** on show day. Good luck with the projects, and hope you hear some good news from the vet.

hopefully just an infection BUT if the hernia is back probably cut your losses and find another goat. contact nanny_slammer on here for more help OR another goat...

call the VET and get it back in. That should not happen. looks like the stiches were to far apart and it pulled open before it healed.

As goat are shown for meat the belly should not cause and issue unless you close then they will use that against you.

Thanks for all the responses. Our validation isn't till December so another goat is still a option. Seeing the vet at 2:30 today. We will see what they say

Regardless of how much money/time you want to spend fixing the goat you need to consider the condition it will be in after having had surgery and having been in pain for this amount of time. While other animals your daughter will be competing against are eating and flourishing, hers is busy just surviving. He may look like he's in good condition to you, but how does he stack up against others? In my opinion, she would be better off starting over with a healthy animal that doesn't already have an inherent health problem that may take several more weeks or even months to recover from.

We seen the vet and turns out it is a abscess. It has been drained and flushed. Got some antibiotics to go with it. Abdominal wall is good and no hernia.

I do agree with those saying get another goat would be the best, but they are actually pretty hard to find right now it seems in our area. It took us a bit of searching to get this one and he wasn't really all that close. It being her first year we will likely just stay the course for now even though we are a bit behind.
