I'd say what you have there is not "hoarding"...but you know there are some folks with 10 times what you have...THAT is "hoarding"

Uh the raw materials are EXPENSIVE. I deal in raw metals for work on a lot of our jobs. There is a reason that people are stealing AC units off of roofs and off the ground... the copper in the lines are worth good money. Copper prices are and have consistently been high. The problem with ammunition is hoarding. The big ammo makers are turning out the same amount they have always been. But before they didn't have guys waiting at the dock to buy the ammo off the wally truck before it hit the shelves. I imagine everyone knows "the secret" behind the ammo shortage, but my opinion is there is no secret, its just people hoarding ammo.

I agree... when you have 8 or 9 different calibers, and have a few boxes of rounds for each... it doesn't take long to come up with a good sized stash.

THis is basically what I would shoot in maybe a couple years or so. The only thing I need are a few more boxes of plinking rounds for my 357, and a few more 17 HMR

We are our own worst enemy in this. Ammo hoarding is the direct cause of this.

I bought enough to do me for a while. I am seeing more ammo on shelves of Academy, BPS, and Cabelas in the past couple of weeks, even though your options are somewhat limited. I believe that it is supply and demand driving up prices and driving down availablility. The flipside of this is that if you don't shoot alot and you have a lot of ammo "hoarded" won't that hurt the ammo companies in the future?

PRKCHP-With all due respect to the gun store owner,he is misinformed.
Supply and demand and our present adminstration is fueling this shortage.IMHO
Also, the ammo manufactors are in no hurry to resupply, because the price is up. Why get 8.00 dollars a box, when you can get 16.00
How much was gas last year?

First time I've heard this, but it came from a gun shop owner. Any truth to it?
mercury was removed a long time ago by american ammo manufacturers,, some foreign nations still use it but it is not needed and is what causes bore rust i think most of it left in the 1960's maybe as early bas the fifties for some ammo...

in other words it aiint got nothin to do with mercury

There has been higher demand ever since the "Feddle Gub'mint" started ordering more ammo 5-6 years ago in order to fight two wars. The majority of the shortage has been due to hoarding since the inaguration in January. Rightly or wrongly, folks are worried about general availibilty in the future. As far as cost of materials - after peaking in the fall the prices of most base commodities have collapsed for the most part.

YES, you have every right to buy whatever you want but you are one of the problems. Because of your PARANOIA people cannot find ammo for personal use. There is no need to hoard.

I just went to a chl class and the instructor said that the reason for the shortage of ammo is the ammo manufacturing companies are trying to restock the ammo that the military have used in the war and second people are hording the ammo

I've been away from the computer for a while, had to do the important things in life, take the kids to the deer lease.
Um, Lone Aggie, people I know have started hoarding their copper because it went way down in scrap price. I cannot speak for lead, brass, but I would figure it would be the same.

I read something about law enforcement increasing their use as well and their training has caused part of the increase in demand

there is so much in theatre and in prep ships in that area that you wouldnt believe! The stuff that gets expended stateside is all training use ammo and is rationed rather closely so knowing how it all works, the military is sitting high on the hog for ammo. they could literally glut the market and have enough ammo for each of us
