Is it worth parting out a wrecked Sierra?

My 21yo son totaled my 2002 Sierra this weekend. He was buying it from me, so he will be responsible for continuing to pay for it. He doesnt make much money, so I am thinking about parting it out, or selling it as a parts truck.

Looks like used transmissions are going for $1000 or so. Maybe ebay for the smaller parts?

Is it worth it for a low income person?

    Any experience?

    Is the motor salvageable? Size?

      I've done it...

You can get some money out of the motor/trans (t-case?)
Maybe a little out of the Rear Axle.
The rest can be sold but it will take time and patience.

Will take some time but worth it if you can take stuff apart correctly.

Sounds like his problem to solve. Maybe he can spend a few hundred and still have to drive it till he can buy something else

I doubt the motor is still good. Probable just transmission, a couple of wheels and misc parts. Its still at the tow lot, will probably pick it up today

You would be surprised. Might need to replace some of the belt driven items, but there might be a lot that is savable.

It's gone. I would call salvage yard and sell it as it is...

I guess it depends on how much he owes and how many body panels are in really good shape.

Glad kids ok. If the front seats are grey I’ll buy the driver seat. The back support on mine is broke and is lop sided.

I have always wondered how much someone could get out of a totaled car if you had the space to store it and piece it out on ebay. Just from the replacement pieces I have purchased on ebay for my Tacoma I would come out waaaaaaaaay ahead of selling it to a salvage yard for a couple grand. Door handles, Screws, panels etc etc...

I was thinking the same thing. We just got my son an 02 silverado that needs several parts, but I think OP is a little far for me.

If it was newer, I think you'd have better luck parting it out. Junk yard, or auto salvage might be your best bet.

Before making a decision, I’d post on local Craigslist you’re parting out, and see what interest you get. Never post your phone number for texts- use their anonymous email for responses.

Be honest- what’s still good, engine may be but it’s all sold as-is.

Ignore the scammers emails. I parted out our son’s 78 Dodge after he rolled it in high school.

Costs nothing and you may be surprised.

Glad your son is OK most important.
