Don’t make your own call. Just buy a dr-85 if you want to call and a have a cheapy. Call making is pretty hard - not something you can pick up unless you buy a call insert and you just turn the barrel.

Just find out where the ducks want to be, if it’s on public land, it may be a little trickier to do that due to pressure.

Calling only helps so much these days. Being in the X is what really matters.

There are 2 methods for duck hunting:

          1. The old school method: Scout, find the birds, and set up in a spot where you can hide from them. Throw out decoys. If not many birds, don't throw as many decoys, you want it to look natural. Keep your face down, don't call much, and let them get in range. Add a little motion with a rippler or jerk string on calm days. Watch how the birds behave. If they are flaring, you need to change something. If they are hitting one spot, consider moving closer but don't run them out. Be respectful of other hunters around you by not setting up within 200 yards or so.

          2. The modern method: Show up for the first time on the morning of, get lost, get to a spot, not necessarily your spot. Bonus if you run your mud boat through someone's setup. Set up 50 yards from the nearest group. Throw out 12 dozen decoys in a reverse semi octagonal J hook, and a dozen mojos. About 10 minutes before shooting time start blasting at everything resembling a duck/goose/coot/penguin that flies by. No distance is too far. You should have a 3.5" with BBs by golly, not some 2 3/4" chump gun. Make sure to call constantly, I mean if you were a single guy and some girl was screaming her head off at everyone you'd be attracted to her right? Ducks are the same. If the bird falls more than 10 yards from you, it's probably lost so don't bother looking. No reason to risk getting the required sitka gear sweaty. Shoot a couple duck like creatures, leave by 8am, making sure to run through everyone else on the way out. Listen for shots and look on the internet, that's where you'll go tomorrow. Post a minimum of 30 pics on your social media of choice to ensure everyone knows you are hardcore.

Method 1 is more productive but makes you a jerk if you don't tell everyone where you were...

In all seriousness.... If you are a novice duck hunter this is the most guaranteed way to get a leg up on the more seasoned hunters.

If you've got standing timber, you don't need a blind. Heck, if you're half underwater, you don't need a blind.
