    Alberta Mule Deer Hunt

A group of us are going to Alberta to hunt mule deer 11/7-11/12 with an outfitter. We will be hunting around Medicine Hat, Alberta. I’ve been told it’s plains and rolling hills in the area. We will be using the guides rifles not bringing our own.

Anyone have any experience in the area during that time of the year?

    Thanks,
    Jake

          Good luck!!

I'd just make darn sure you're comfortable shooting a different rifle. Shoot it a lot and learn the trigger weight, and right where it's hitting at 200 yards.

Should be a good hunt! Great mule deer in that area. I just got back from Alberta and took my rifle. It’s not terribly hard to bring your own. I personally hate shooting somebody else’s stuff. I have dove it but it’s never quite the same. Specifically if you are used to a certain trigger.

From the beginning the outfitter suggested we use their rifles because of how hard the process was getting rifles into Canada so we just went with it. I would imagine this late in the game we probably couldn’t take our own rifles. I’m sure there is a permit or something that would need to be submitted (if it is anything like Mexico)

Either way I am pumped up to get a chance at one of those big boys!

                      Sounds like a cool hunt

Those are my questions about bringing your own rifle.
Is it difficult? Just declaration and paperwork?

I lived and hunted in Canada 6 years over past 12. Back in Texas now and since then I am hunter hosted every 3 years (2015, 2018 and again this year 2022). Hunted elk in September south of Calgary that way in Porcupine Hills around Claresholm. Know the Medicine Hat, Lethbridge , Moose Jaw (it all, as my boys played travel baseball, combined with most my elk and mule deer hunting while resident was south). I am headed back the same week, but hunting Whitetail in Northern Alberta around Athabasca

Shoot me a PM and I can try and answer any questions you may have.

Great people and great country to hunt!

Taking a rifle into Canada is no big deal. I do it every year. Just make sure you have a good case with good locks. Make sure to have a firearms declaration form filled out when going through customs.

I have taken shotguns and rifles into Canada on a few occasions and it’s pretty simple.
