    Arborist help..oak tree prune

The only Big Oak Tree on my property is pretty old and has a prune cut that was made a long time ago that doesn't seem to be healing properly... I try to keep the hole blown out so debris doesn't decay in it but I'm wondering if I should spray something on it or in it..I have some tar pruning spray just not sure since not a new cut

It's not letting me upload pic I can send it to someone....the cut is around 20" diameter and there about a 6" hole in it about 2" deep

I have seen pruning holes filled with grout or concrete. Don't know how good it works or if it's bad for the tree. Google it.
I would probably use a can of Great Stuff foam and fill it with that since it will give as the tree grows. Maybe even some of that black rubber Flex Seal I see advertised to fix boat leaks.

Aerosol rubber under coat like you spray in the wheel wells on a pickup.

Is the pruned cut back to the main trunk or scaffold limb…or did the tree trimmer leave a horn?

If a horn was left, you could/should make the proper cut back to the scaffold or main trunk then seal with flex seal or most any spray paint.

            My .02

I'm not an arborist, but I did earn a minor in Forestry and Botany and admitted specimen tree hugger.

If there is enough limb left, make a new clean cut closer to the beam.

We have a pecan that is over 160 yrs old and I have used that practice when there are limb breaks. Keep the tree from stressing. Drought, low minerals, ect. Always prune back the small sucker limbs. They take energy and moisture from the large upper canopy limbs. You are about into the right window of time to prune older trees.

Clean cuts on a healthy tree do not require sealing. Bad cuts/breaks will provide invitation and home to borers.

Good Luck. Share the pics when you can. Where is the tree? How old?

If you have a heritage (old) live oak tree, you are very fortunate. They are too valuable to put at risk. Call an arborist!

Send me a pic 832 six 5 one 9686. I’m an Arborist. Don’t fill the cavity. Doing so will trap moisture inside, furthering decay.

It's on the west side of Georgetown I'm told it's probably around 200 years old

                            That's a pickle.

Appears tree started to heal itself and then went into stress.

                            When was the cut made?
