    Cummins limp mode while towing

We were on our way to San Marcos for family weekend at my daughters college, watch the game then heading to the lease tomorrow morning from here. While on the way down, check engine light came on and transmission went into 4th gear and that was it. I pulled over, messed with the shifter but still only 4th. Had the code pulled at o reillly and it’s a solenoid. I guess the truck sensed a problem and does the limp mode for safety and preservation.

I disconnected both batteries and let sit a while, hooked back up and drove the truck. It’s shifting properly now through all gears up to OD. I pulled our camper to the ranch last weekend with zero issues, pulling the ranger on a trailer now.

What do y’all think? Truck has 198k miles on original trans and never gave an inkling of an issues of needing rebuilt. It may be time.

Any of y’all experienced this and what was the end game? Thanks TBH.

Probably the shift solenoid. It’s a known issue on a lot of the non Aisin transmissions.

My brother had a 2016 that did the same thing and it will cook the transmission if you continue driving it.

If the solenoid is accessible without tearing into transmission I would replace it

If not, may be time to have it rebuilt and upgrade some of the other internals if that is an option

I sure would not want to get stranded or burn the transmission up

I don’t believe it’s a very difficult fix but I do know the part was on national back order when my brother initially took his in for the recall notice he had for the solenoid on his truck.

That said, if the truck is shifting fine now, it’s probably ok to drive without risking damage. Just be sure to pay attention because they can get stuck in 4th gear and not go into limp mode. If that happens, shut it down immediately because that is where you’d end up in trouble.

Haha yea it does brother. I knew when my alternate went out on my ranch truck last weekend and I put it in the shop that something else would be breaking soon.

Solenoid pack in the transmission is going out. Replaced mine twice in my 2016 ram 2500. It's not hard you just drop the pan and it's right there on the bottom unbolt and bolt in a new one. They're prone to go out it's a common issue. You can find them on ebay or buy brand new ones from aftermarket diesel parts websites. I splurged for a "upgraded heavy duty" one and it still went bad. There's plenty of youtube videos on how to change it out.

Not a problem at all, one other thing though.

As I mentioned earlier, there was a recall on that solenoid issued in 2018 I believe. You’d do well to check and see if that recall applies to your truck, as it could be fixed at no charge to you.

This is the code. If I can just drop the pan and replace it that will be great. I’ll change the filter wipe I’m in there.

I saw a Dodge dually on I10 limping with a 20' travel trailer.
Had a "diesel something" sticker on the back glass.
He was apparently in limp mode. Something was limp.
Blew past him with my 20yo suburban.
