    Brush Identification

My lease is LOADED with this brush and I am wanting to cut limbs off of it and use it to brush in my popup blinds instead of using cedar. What kind of brush is it and will the leaves fall off of the limbs when I cut them off or will the leaves just turn a different color like cedars do? If they are going to fall off then I will just use cedars, but I would like to use a natural vegitation to brush my blinds in with. There is not a cedar tree on the whole place.

I can't help you any, but if you can find a source for finding out, i would sure be interested. I have seen some books but they always show drawings and I need them pictures. Wish you luck.

I don't know what it's called, but they all go bald in the winter. I use that stuff with the huge thorns on it around the base of my ground blind though. It keeps cattle and other critters away.

Not sure what it is, but Dang! Can't ya find something without all them thorns on it! That's gonna eat ya up when you go to cutting and brushing in! And I would think those leaves will fall off after it dies!

this is a pretty good source of photos

Find profiles and images of native plants in North America's largest native plant database, in addition to native plant suppliers around the country.

If the leaves are toothed it's Granjeno, and they will fall off after being cut even though its a evergreen. If the leaf edges are entire (Smooth) then it's Brasil and it's a evergreen also and some will fall off but not all of them

                  Pic of Granjeno

I think goatbrush may be the right answer. I have lots of the same stuff on my lease, and it isn't evergreen. It's dang sure nasty and thorny stuff.

How come EVERYTHING that sprouts from the ground in Texas has thorns?
