I was watching him hard too! He was a toad body wise, pretty sure the biggest one I’ve ever seen. He WAS an older deer also. We had a friend that hadn’t killed a nice axis and I put him on this buck 5-6 times and he couldn’t make up his mind. I said OK then, the next time he steps out he’s going on my wall. He didn’t step out again and a couple of weeks later I was back there, taking a nap at camp and the state trapper came by and said he found a huge dead Axis about 25’ off of the road 3 miles away. They didn’t wake me up and went to look. Sho-nuff it was ole big . There is a military guy that owns land there and I believe he’s a gunny but this old buck walked acRoss his land about 75 yds from his patio and he gave his .556 to his buddy and said chootem. Well, the summagun shot him low in the shoulder and he ran off. They looked for a little while and didn’t find any blood . He was about 800 yds from where they shot him. I got my hands on his horns and I was Ticked off to say the least. This old buck should have never been shot by a rookie with a pop gun. That makes 2 for me lol
You're talking about the really heavy-horned, reddish- golden horned one in the picture at the feeder? That would make two dead ones that you have found - I think that tells you that you need to start whacking a few when you have the chance I was going to say he looked like a toad body wise. A little hard to tell from that pic but looks really deep in the chest. My Dad shot one like that with his bow about 15 years ago - huge body. Started raining about 30 minutes after he shot it and we never could find it.

I’m sorry, yes Sir the heavy reddish gold one. I’m a guest at this ranch but it is family. I count my blessings everyday. He has told me many times to kill whatever I want but I don’t want to wear out my welcome. I have had so many big axis in front of me out there along with very nice whitetails but he’s going to have to be in the all above category and that may never happen.

I totally understand. It's easy to say "shoot 'em" when you're not the one in that situation. Just hate to see people watch them and watch them and then have someone else wound them or something like that.
Sounds like you have a sweet deal there and lots of great animals to watch and chase.
Having a place like that to go to is priceless.
Axis antlers are very deceptive. I think the majority of people that see a 30-32” beamed deer think they are 35-36. Axis are just very Majestic and that’s thrown us all off many a time.
This buck at 3.5-4 was in the 36” range all the way around but very penciled antlers. If he would have been in velvet I would have definitely killed him
