I didn’t have to do much judging on this old timers teeth , what he had left were worn plumb out.
Axis antlers are very deceptive. I think the majority of people that see a 30-32” beamed deer think they are 35-36. Axis are just very Majestic and that’s thrown us all off many a time.
This buck at 3.5-4 was in the 36” range all the way around but very penciled antlers. If he would have been in velvet I would have definitely killed him
Thanks for sharing, definitely deceiving on length as you fooled so folks who are much better at judging than myself. How long it he from his base to the middle of split at the caudal?
Thanks, that was fun. I agree, especially people who may not have seen a lot of them. I usually try to underestimate a little because I know I will overestimate.
My cousin has killed a couple toads. One in the 35" + range, and that thing was huge, super heavy too. But this one definitely does have more curve to his beams than most and is wide.

Like that one, or maybe even a little heavier. Hard to tell from the pic, it also looks like that one is in velvet, while his was hard-horned. That one there has a ton of mass too.
The one my cousin shot was an absolute beast. The largest one I have ever seen killed, although I have seen pictures of bigger.
You've got some nice ones there for sure. Good luck gettin' one.

He’s definitely hard horned. I had him at 15 yds .
I see that now, zoomed in more and I coukd see that. Really bright colored horns. He is really heavy horned and a really pretty buck.
I was watching him hard too! He was a toad body wise, pretty sure the biggest one I’ve ever seen. He WAS an older deer also. We had a friend that hadn’t killed a nice axis and I put him on this buck 5-6 times and he couldn’t make up his mind. I said OK then, the next time he steps out he’s going on my wall. He didn’t step out again and a couple of weeks later I was back there, taking a nap at camp and the state trapper came by and said he found a huge dead Axis about 25’ off of the road 3 miles away. They didn’t wake me up and went to look. Sho-nuff it was ole big . There is a military guy that owns land there and I believe he’s a gunny but this old buck walked acRoss his land about 75 yds from his patio and he gave his .556 to his buddy and said chootem. Well, the summagun shot him low in the shoulder and he ran off. They looked for a little while and didn’t find any blood . He was about 800 yds from where they shot him. I got my hands on his horns and I was Ticked off to say the least. This old buck should have never been shot by a rookie with a pop gun. That makes 2 for me lol
