He got Drawn

My son Greyson, got drawn for the youth Balcones Canyonlands WMA hunt. I'm super excited. Anyone ever been on this hunt? I'll take all the info I can get. Its much appreciated.

Never hunted it and from what I’ve heard over the years it’s hit or miss depending on the unit you get. One way or another I bet it’s a great time spent with the boy

Depends on which area you get but overall the deer numbers have been way down from what they used to be. Tons of hogs in the area though. Some of it backs up to our place.

Will be a good time with the boy no matter what. Great scenery good hiking trails and a chance at a deer or pig.

Just do a quick search on here for Balcones NWR. Several threads about it and unfortunately, most of the reports are not real positive. Surprising because it's in an area that should have high deer numbers.

Most of the area is VERY thick and because it's a National WR, no baiting allowed to stop deer. Enjoy the time with your son and hope you experience is better than some others folks have had in the past.

My son drew the same hunt Nov 11-13.
Hopefully it turns out to be a good hunt.
We have been on drawn hunts before that he was one of the only ones who had a great hunt.

Lots of deer in the area but unfortunately because no baiting is allowed, nothing is holding the deer there. I looked at a ranch a couple years back that bordered the refuge (that did feed) and it had great deer numbers.

So in a nutshell, majority of the deer will be concentrated on neighboring landholdings where there is a steady supply of feed and water.
