    Acuna area hunting

Anyone have experience deer hunting on the Mexico side around Acuna? I don't know much about the country north of Piedras.

Any areas that are better than others (what direction, how far in , near towns, etc)?

PS - please no general Mexico comments

We looked at a ranch about 20 miles over the border from Del Rio a few years back. Beautiful ranch, but deer were scarace. There are some very good ranches there however because one of the biologists that helped us with our ranch on the US side of the river there works a couple ranches across on the Acuna side and he told us they routinely take 170+ bucks... I saw pics, but we were never able to get a chance to lease or even get an invite to go check it out... The best ranches are supposedly back toward the mountains... they are about 75 to 80 miles across the river in a pretty much due west direction. We can see 'em from our ranch just south of Del Rio... Also, Acuna seems to not be as dangerous as farther south as it is a major NAFTA city... lots of industry there now. Back in the early 80's it was about 25K people and Del rio was about the same size. Now Del Rio is in the 35K range and Acuna is over 250K people!!! Places where we used to duck hunt along the river we can no longer do so because "town" has moved so far south along the river....

I know Heath may not be safe with some of the Cougars I've seen at the Corona Bar.

I hunted there in December 04. We were only about 8 miles from Acuna on a lease that was broken into 5 pastures, and the place was long and narrow with the camp house at the front of the first pasture. Any of that sound familiar? This place looked like it had a lot of potential but we were pretty sure that the land owner was running in hunters behind us. There were some good deer down there though.
