I have 5 detectors. My go to is my DEUS but that is a high end machine and you said you don't want to go there. My back up is the AT Pro. I bought it in kit form and it came with a pin pointer, CD for instruction, padded case, head phones and digging shovel. I think it was around $650.00. I started with a couple of cheaper Bounty Hunters for me and my wife. I found a lot of good stuff with it but up grade with a used Whites DFX . I found that to be way too heavy to carry around so I went with the DEUS and AT Pro. It is a fun hobby.
I can and do swing that DEUS for many hours a day out on the desert in New Mexico. It weighs 1 1/2 pounds and no wires to deal with.

I've used an inexpensive Garrett (ACE), and Nokta Anfibio (upgrade to the Simplex mentioned above), an older Whites DFX, an entry Fisher, and a Minelab Equinox 800. The Anfibio is my primary, but it is way too noisy for me; the Whites still works great. However, the best (IMO) is the Minelab Equinox 800. I've heard the Garrett AT Pro or AT MAX are great as well and may end up going that way in the near future. Good luck, lets us know what you find.
