I have had them all my life. I have a blue now and will be getting a red soon that has heartworms. Owner doesn't want to spend the money to treat him and can't keep him anymore and is going to give him to me. He has had heartworms for several years now and does just fine. Although he may die at anytime. I am willling to bet the dog was a kids pet and diagnossed with heartworms, family couldn't afford to treat it, so dumped it and told the kid it ran away because they didn't want to deal with the guilt of not treating the heartworms.
Heelers are by far one of the smartest dogs there are. And they are the oldest living dog on record. My last one died at age 20 and the one I have now is 15 and still going strong.......

have a blue...awesome awesome dog...extremely energetic...him and my catahoula keep each other worn out...good for me!...he was almost too energetic for us to handle as a pup...he is around 2 1/2 now and really coming out to be an awesome dog/pet...calmed way way down...suprises me everyday with things he does...like wont eat his food till i give him permission, wont step into the house till i ok it, etc...never taught these things...very smart!...and TOUGH like someone mentioned
They're great dogs, owned 4 in this life and they are true blue till the end. Last one is now my mom's dog and she's going on ten but you couldn't tell. And they are VERY SMART!!
Have had 3 through my life, mine right now is 5 years old. She is very loyal and awesome with my little kids. She has been hit by a tank truck and ran over by a ford explorer and still going strong. She's hail on cattle too, bad part about that is she is hard to call off once she gets going.
Had one 20yrs ago. Jumping-est dog I've ever owned. Lived in town at the time and he would run and ricochet himself off the house and over the 5' chain link fence. Finally gave him to a family that had more room for him to run/roam.
WoW. I had one,or my son did, about 6 years ago who would run around the yard building up momentum andricochet himself off one side of the fence and over the othe side of a 6 footer. That was a funny dog. Red heeler too.
HAve a 11 yo. Blue now and a red mixed with lab. Both are great dogs.
They are great dogs, I have 6 of them and foster more, they are so smart and willing to please! If you would like to adopt one I have three that need new homes all great dogs, (owner surrenders very sad!)
I had a Red/Blue cross. Sadie. Best dog I ever owned. She was already fixed when I got her. She was 9 months old and had some obediance training. Original owners had a toddler and she was just too rough for that age. Not mean/aggressive towards the kid, but hyper. Loved to run, nip at heals, and JUMP!
Sadie put on a ton of weight in her later years (my fault cause she ate what we did) but in her early days, she could jump in the back of my 4x4 truck w/the gate up, and never touch it.
We lost her last year. Had 13 great years w/her.
Got another blue following in her footsteps. Dixie. She loves Bar S weenies!
Hard headed and smart, which makes for a lot of mischief. Had one that loved to ride on top of cap. Look at your shadow and looked like he was surfing. Have two littermates almost a year old . They have chewed the limbs off the bottom of a pine tree , as well as anything they can get in their mouth.
