    Bee Keepers & Ag Exemptions

Anyone here get an ag exemption for beekeeping? I’ve bought a small piece of land in Mason county and I can’t get an exemption for whitetail due to the size (11 acres). That being said, I can get one for bee keeping.

I’d appreciate any direction on where to start. Or if there are any beekeepers in the area, I would be more than happy to allow you access to the place to manage hives.

    Thanks!

Find a bee keeper in that area and allow them to keep hives on your land.

You need to check with your county. There are minimum acreage requirements for bees in Bandera co.

I did carpenter bees. Colorado County. Max acreage 20 acres. I am at 18 and some change Just had to build them a house. Up to them if they want to live in the houses I built. Check with your CAD.

Thanks guys… I’ll check with appraisal dist. It’s my understanding that it’s not an east endeavor to keep bees. Maybe I can find someone close that will do it

No it’s not an easy endeavor at all. I have right at 50 hives and to do it right is not an easy or cheap thing to do.

Look for a local bee keepers organization. Good resource for a beginner. I considered bee keeping for my 15 acres. Decided it is easier to lease for cattle.

I think Texas A&M offer “Master Bee Keeper” courses.

From a friend that looked into it recently. It seems like the days of "letting them use your propety" are gone and most people make you pay them to keep bees on your place. Its still way cheaper than the taxes but isnt free.

This and they might even plant some alfalfa for you and keep you supplied in fresh honey. Alfalfa honey is the best!

I have 12 wooded acres in Ellis county so I was in the same boat. I did a lot of research on this. It looks like a lot of work. It’s a business for bee keepers to put them on your place to help you lower taxes. The people I found would make it about a wash unless I stayed there for 5 years. They split the honey with me. Their pitch was I could sell the honey to offset the cost.

IMO you have to want to do this for more than just the tax savings.

I know of a couple bee keepers that pay to put their bees in crop fields, but they are big timers that make a living off of it. It's a pretty mutually beneficial thing for them to use your land if you have or neighbor people with crops. Probably depends on how many hives they can put though, they're definitely making money off you just by having them there.

What’s the minimum acreage for wildlife exemption there?
Sometimes you can pool together with your neighbors.
