    Small Outboard Help

I have a small 6hp yamaha kicker motor. everything is great with it but the steering. I went to use it for the first time all season last week and the steering was much tighter than I ever remember on any other small outboard I've used. I had about an inch of movement each way before it would get very tight and to the point I felt like I would break something trying to force it.

I backed out the friction piece screw several turns. No improvement. Backed it out some more and no improvement again. I ended up backing it out all the way and pulled it out. Finally I had full range of motion without any tightness or binding.

Here is where the predicament is. I tried to get that friction screw back into the friction plate but can't get it to catch the threads on the swivel bracket that holds the shaft in place and allows it to turn. Is there a tool or certain position it needs to be in to get it back in? Turning the outboard one way pushes the screw out and the other way allows you to get it in almost to the threads but not close enough to catch them.

Below is a picture of the outboard and circled are the screw, plate, and bracket.

My guess is there is a detent on that shaft where the screw goes thru.

One of my thoughts as well. I've tried lifting the shaft but its almost impossible to do without tilting up the entire outboard. Have also tried pushing it down with no luck.

My other thought is that the friction place which is basically just a piece of pipe strap, isn't lining back up all the way.

I don't want to end up taking it into the yamaha dealer and them make me look like a total idiot haha.
