The Promise
Deuteronomy/Devarim is the last of the five books of Moses, which are traditionally called the Torah, or Yahweh’s teaching and instruction. It is the culmination of the first four Books of Torah and the powerhouse that holds the vision and mandate for the Bride of Christ. For those who choose to walk humbly before Yahweh, the book of Deuteronomy becomes a type and shadow of the mantle Elijah passed on to Elisha. For Yahweh’s priesthood, Deuteronomy is a place of anointing, of righteousness and of empowerment in the Spirit of Jesus (John 5: 46-47).
Deuteronomy epitomizes Moses’ last words to the Children of Israel before they advanced in as a mighty army to possess the land. Those who listened to the instructions and took them to heart would be carried into victory. These principles lifted even the weakest man to become the strongest and carried many beyond their own abilities, giving vision to the poor of heart, humbling the oppressor and crushing the enemy. For those who walked in the words of Yahweh, it became their very life.
Jesus is the Word/Devarim made flesh. He is the author of the Word. It is Jesus who gives mankind life in Him/the Word – the incarnate Living Torah - the Messiah. The purpose of the Word was and always is to direct men to Him. Torah separated from Jesus has no life on its own. Jesus is the purpose, goal and fulfillment of the Word/Torah (Genesis 1:1; John 1:1, 14, Romans 10:4).
Moses
In Deuteronomy, Moses reflected on the forty-year journey of the Israelites through the wilderness - from the lingering effects of Egypt and their rebellious natures - to the progressive walk of redemption and holiness in God’s mercy. Moses had led the Children of Israel through the understanding of the Abrahamic Covenant (salvation in Jesus). Then he led them on to their marriage/ketubah Covenant (the Mosaic Covenant) at Mount Sinai. We have their legacy as our example(1 Cor 10:1-11). The days in the wilderness are complete when the Bride/believer understands and walks in the principles of Torah (Jesus Christ’s commandments). Only then does Yahweh draw her close to Himself to prepare for the wedding. It is the teachings of Moses that escort the Bride to her betrothal and it is the Spirit of Elijah (found in the next Covenant, the Davidic Covenant) that ushers the Bride into the wedding. When believers are fully engaged in a Torah lifestyle they are married with Jesus, the embodiment of the Spirit of Elijah. This is what produces the transforming power necessary for believers to reach their goal and purpose in Him – eternal life. This is called the restoration of David’s tabernacle/Covenant (Amos 9:11).
Looking back for those who have married there are fond memories of all the preparations, the anticipated wait for the appointed day and finally the fulfillment when you arrive at the altar together. Is your wedding day the end of your goal or the beginning of your goal? Many Christians have been taught that because Jesus died and resurrected they are no longer under that old law as it is done away with and no longer required or applicable now that believers are under grace in Jesus. Yes, Jesus fulfilled the requirements according to the law. That is His goal. Now life in Him begins. This life is not a synonym for done away with. It is the opposite. As you followed all the rules to marry, the rules for marriage do not cease at the altar but continue to open up in support of your new life/covenant together as husband and wife. Your walk in Jesus is the same and begins when you place your life on His altar and continues, as He so generously gives you all the guidelines that provide for this abundant new life in Him. This was the heart of Moses in the retelling of Israel’s journey in Deuteronomy before Israel entered the Promised Land. This is the promised seed.
If you only had five weeks to live as Moses did, what would your last words be? He knew Israel was on the eve of her destiny and purpose. He had led all these people for over forty years, and here they were coming down to the final days with him. Even though Moses could not join them, he wanted to be a good steward in presenting a spotless Bride. Therefore this review was very poignant. He wanted to make sure Israel would carry the testimony of the Covenant and legacy back to the Land with all the wisdom that they had been taught. Moses knew this would mean the difference between life and death once they entered.
What will our legacy and lasting memories be after we are gone? What will our children and grandchildren remember most about us? Will we have passed on good choices and a heritage lifestyle as Moses was preparing to do? Moses invested immense wisdom from the Father/Abba into his children and grandchildren – as well as all of God’s children, including us. This wisdom is measured in wealth well beyond silver and gold.
Moses lived his whole life, all one hundred and twenty years, in the wilderness outside of the land of Israel yet he knew and had a personal relationship in The Revelation – Jesus himself. Because of this Moses was able to pass The Gospel on to myriads of generations after him. Not only to those who were about to enter Canaan after his death, but to all Israel from that time forward to this present day. Today, with the knowledge and understanding from Moses we, Abraham’s children, also know how to enter and conquer the Promised Land.
Many believers have experienced a wilderness experience and wonder how they could possibly survive. Others have been taught to disregard the words imparted by Moses, which resulted in their generations being scattered throughout the Nations. Did this disappoint Moses or was he encouraged nonetheless? This man had a deep faith and relationship in Yahweh and when he died was able to see Israel’s rich inheritance in the Land within the seed of Abraham to the next generations – expected through the promises of Yahweh. This was the salvation of his soul.

1 Corinthians 14:19 Paul… “yet in the church [assembly/ekklesia] I would rather speak five words [synonym for the five books of Moses/Torah] with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.”

Ezekiel 20:34-37 “I will bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries where you are scattered, with a mighty hand, with an outstretched arm, and with fury poured out. And I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and there I will plead My case with you face to face. Just as I pleaded My case with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I will plead My case with you,” says the Lord GOD. “I will make you pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant”

Proverbs 3:13-15 “Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding; for her proceeds are better than the profits of silver, and her gain than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies, and all the things you may desire cannot compare with her.”

And the Scripture [Jesus], foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles [Nations] by faith, preached the Gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, ‘In you all the nations shall be blessed.’ So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.”

Hebrews 11:13-16 “These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.”
1 Peter 1:6-12 “In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ/Yeshua Ha Mashiach, whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith - the salvation of your souls. Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the Gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven - things which angels desire to look into.”
