    Jeep Question

    What's a good price on a 1979 Jeep CJ7?
The one my daughter is looking at has a 6" lift with 35 Super Swampers on it. It is in good shape, just not perfect. It has after market bumpers and a hardtop.
Should be fun fixin it up, that is should she get it.
Thought I would ask the Brotherhood here for a little input. Not real sure of Jeep prices, and I hope you can help.
    Thanks

Just sold a 79 CJ 5 with a 12 in extension on the body tub, good 30 in tires ,fair body,,,great after market bumpers front and rear with an interchangable basket.and a Tow bar.But it had a blown Transmission and transfer case..don't know what was wrong but a jep dealership wanted 5000 to rebuild both of them..[think he was nuts but got a written estimate] ... I sold it as is where it was for $1000 cash. He wanted to work and I didn't..I think this was a good deal both ways...Bought a new Kawasiki Mule, double seat,4wd...very pleased with it.

It's hard to say from the info up top. Does it have the straight six in it? Also, buying something with a lift that big can be a pretty big gamble depending on what type it is, if it was installed properly and if the previous owner used it for four wheeling which could have damaged the drive train. I would say that the price would range between $4,000 and $8,000. Do you know what they are asking for it? If you can find out any more details about it or pictures post them up.

I have seen them anywhere from 2500 to about 10 grand . Depending on what all work they have done to them. There is a nice jeep for sale in the classifieds here

Straight 6 and asking $6K, but have already talked him down to $5K
Drive train seems to be in good shape and there are no leaks (Transmission, oil, etc) Needs a little work, but the work looks to be mior, as in no radio, on light out.

If there is NO rust then 5K if a fair price from the sounds of it, but there are too many varibles for me to give you an acurate figure. I have bought and sold several solid CJs valued from 1500 to 7500. Really depends on what you are looking for.

The following is not my place to say at all, but I feel I must always butt in when this subject comes up...

If your daughter is an experienced driver then it may not matter, but if she has been on the road a short time then be real cautious buying her a CJ (especially a lifted one). At bare minimum stay post 82 to get the wide trac axles for stability. The best CJ's I have ever had, I would not let most young drivers take out. The combo of the short wheelbase and the suspension used in the CJs do not make the safest road vehicle. Something to consider is a TJ. You still get the Jeep feel and look, but they are alot more stable on the road. Just my 2 cents, once again, it is absolutly none of my business but I would feel bad if I didn't say it every time the subject comes up.

Dawg beat me to it, I'd look at a Tacoma, we all saw how mine saved my hind end a few weeks ago. And a taco will go anywhere a freaking jeep can and then some!!!

Another thing...if there are no oil leaks on it then it is out of oil Never seen a CJ that didn't leak (even more so when lifted) What tranny is in it?? It can make a big difference in value. If you can get me some more details (as many as possible) I can get you pretty close on value.

Best way to get an idea is craigslist.
Look and compare, you may even find a better deal.

Jeeps don't leak..................they mark their territory!

Sounds like an OK deal but not for a 1st car.
