How does google maps know there is a large object in the road?

I have not noticed an option while using it to report road conditions. Coming through Arkansas yesterday about to go over a hill the app say slow down object in the road and about that same time the truck 100 yards in front of me slams his breaks. It was a really large roll of something laying cross ways. Each lane had to swerve left and right to miss it. If reported by a driver it must be instantly added to the app otherwise it seems a road crew would have already gotten it off the road.
    Just a curious

Google owns waze, which has a feature where drivers can report road conditions. Obstruction, stalled car, etc. I don't use waze but get the Google map notification on truck dash "Obstruction ahead" and then prompts me to choose "cleared" or "still here". I'm sure it has something to do with Waze driver reporting and corroborated by asking other drivers. Something along those lines.

I’ve been using Waze for a few years. Yes, drivers report what they see(object on road, animals nearby, construction, vehicle stopped on road, vehicle on shoulder, police, wreck, traffic jam, road kill, pot hole, ect.) and then other drivers confirm or deny what you see. It is fairly accurate.

        Yep, this right here...
I get the same thing when running ApplePlay in my truck. Don't matter if you're running Google Maps or Waze, the notifications come in... (po-po alerts too )

Maps tracks your gps which is how it knows traffic is slowing down or stalled by everyones speed. They can also tell by driving habits if people are moving out of the way of debris and any other situation by driver behavior.

Waze is amazing and Google has improved immensely. I hadn’t used Google in a long time but tried it a while back and noticed the improvements that have been made.
That Apple play mentioned is some good technology also.
