    Mini Daschund & Snakes ?

I’ve had snakes on my back patio here recently. Not overwhelmed with them
Mainly at night. I’ve had a small copperhead & diamondback water snake
We have a mini dasch & was wondering if he would try & kill them? From what I have researched they are killing machines. Certainly don’t want him to get hit by a copperhead though
Just wondering from experience of others if they have had a mini dasch & snake encounters
Luckily I’ve come across the snakes prior to the dogs walking upon them

They definitely have the potential. My mom has two dachshunds. One is pretty easy going and lays around. The other is a killer. She kills anything that moves. If there's a mouse under something you know it because she will not move from that spot until it comes out. Rain or shine she's waiting it out. I moved some logs for her once and a mouse ran out and tried climbing the fence. She literally ran up that fence and snagged it by the tail and drug it down and killed it. I haven't personally seen her kill a snake but she most definitely would. I have no doubt about that.

It all depends on the personality of your dog. If they're critter getters like that dog is, for sure they'll kill a snake.

We have several and they are definately little snake killers! Usually just small grass snakes in our yard but once killed a coral snake. I have no doubt no matter how big the snake was they would be on it! Sweet pups but its like a switch trips when a snake mouse or other critter shows up!

My mini daschund has been hit by copperheads and water moccasins multiple times. Was pretty lethargic and swell up for about 24 hrs the first time. Hasn’t been as bad the others. She kills anything she’s can catch.

I need to let him square off with a rat snake & see if it’s game on

New neighbor moved in. A month later I hear her screaming No No in her back yard. I run over and her 2 Dash Hounds have killed a kitten - torn it in half - and are eating it. I pick up the pieces and she just does not believe her two baby's could do that.

            They are killers...

Mine will all kill a snake in a heartbeat. I have had 2 bit by copperheads. Yesterday one ran down and killed a rabbit. They are a hound breed and will only kill what they can catch.

Just as some have said...personality. i have one 9 pound little beast that thinks she's a pit bull and is ready to get it on at any time. the other one hides behind the recliner when the door slams.

                  Yeah ours my wife spoils
We have a female mini schnauzer that he likes to wrestle & tangle with and he shreds most any type of toy my wife buys him. Only thing he’s killed are spiders inside the home
I’d like to test him on a good rat snake

Absolute truth. Hunting machines with the patience of Job. Great dogs.

I've had a number of dogs that were copperhead killers. Usually more so after they'd been bit at least once. And they often learned how to grab them and kill them without getting bit. One of the best snake killers I ever had was a large dachshund lab cross. If he saw a snake, just get out of the way, unless you wanted snake guts slung on you...

I’ve had that breed before. They usually get bit on the nose or face. Never had one die from it though.

Yep, me too... Had a black one when we lived in Kingwood... Big live oak trees in the back yard full of cicadas, lots of copperheads... He got bit on the muzzle so many times he'd hardly even swell... First couple times, we'd give him some children's benedryl and he'd be good in a day... Later on, only way we'd know he'd been bit was he'd always leave the dead snake on the patio by the back door as a trophy... Look him over carefully and sometimes could see a little puffy place...
Ol' Stinky hated snakes with a passion!

We have 3…one of them is a killer. Doesn’t back down from anything. Came home to him twice with puncture holes from a husky and a pit bull fight. Healed up just fine…had another tangle with a pit bull the other day and only a scrape on his face. Has been bitten by 2 diamondbacks 5 months apart, once on the nose the other time on the side of his muzzle. Swelled up a bit but made it just fine. You would never know he was that way because most of the time he just lays there and is calm but when another animal is around he lights up! Great dogs to have around especially living in the country. Oh and by the way…don’t ask me what happened to the husky and pit bulls
