    Life and rose bushes

When you see a rose bush you notice all of the nice looking blooms and how pretty it looks. Once you really start looking you can see the thorns on the bush far outnumber the amount of blooms on the plant. Life is a lot like a rose bush. We all have thorns that we have to deal with. If we will spend more time looking at the blooms in our life ,the more the thorns will fade into the background. Take the time to smell the roses.

I'm just hoping the ones I planted in the spring don't die in this heat. Don't forget about watering restrictions.

That reminds me of the Taoists ancient yin and yang philosophy. In the universe there is consistent balance between everything. It brings purpose to the bad (thorns) in life. One literally cannot appreciate and understand or even experience the good (rose buds) without feeling the bad. You would never know a cool day if you never lived through a hot one. It provides context. As you say, it is important to understand and fully experience the thorns but never to dwell too long on it.

Monks of Eastern origins have chants thanking the dharma (laws of order within the world) for bringing pain and heartache as they know without it there would be no peace and prosperity.
