Can I kill Weevils in my Feeder?

Have a feeder that holds a ton of feed. The times we get to go out to the lease are sporadic at best so can't afford to let it run dry. Usually add 700-1,000 pounds each time we go.

Question: Is there something I can spray on top of the feed when it's half full that will kill the weevils without me letting it run dry and without messing up the feed or hurting the deer?

Not that I've ever heard. We run it out or dump it, clean and then spray the legs with Tempo so any left in the area don't come back in......

Diatomaceous earth will kill them, but would think would need to be spread sorta throughout the corn.

If your feeder is already full of weevils then the corn probably just needs to be dumped out. I imagine it’s mostly shell and dust anyway. I don’t know of anything that will kill them while saving the cornfor animals to safety eat.

        Following this.

set feeder throw times for 30 seconds until it's empty.

should find out if there's much game in the area.

we call that "feeding a little rich"

Either dump it, treat, and then refill or treat and don’t feed for a couple weeks.

We get weevils on our silos from time to time. One of us climbs up there and drops a couple tablets of insecticide in with the feed and they’re all dead pretty quick. The kicker is then that grain can’t be fed for a couple weeks but it’s better than just emptying the silos and throwing away all the money we spent buying feed. I can’t remember off the top of my head what the tablets are called, part of me wants to say malathion but I don’t think that’s it.

This seems like the best answer. I'm going to try it on my next feeder refill.

I found this interesting. Looks like Diatomaceous earth can be used as bait for hunting! Who knew! Time to buy stock in this stuff before it becomes the next cottonseed or rice bran craze.

Diatomaceous Earth is a major attraction for wild and domesticated animals without having to advertise it. To prove this, simply put it out on a patch of ground and watch in amazement as the animals react. They lick it, roll in it, play with it and come back for more, over and over again. The reason is that astonishingly, it cleans the animal of parasites from end to end, inside and out and they know instinctively it’s good for them.

DE is best described as a powder and comes in a very fine form, almost like talcum powder. Because of this, there is a danger in the way it is handled. Although perfectly safe for humans to eat, it is not kind to eyes – particularly for contact lens users – and for this reason only, it must be treated with respect. The very thing that scratches and dehydrates the eyes is the very thing that makes it work in its action against pests.

Diatomaceous Earth will kill them, I use a Rudy's cup full per feeder, just shake some in after each bag to get it mixed in. Be sure and get the food grade, we buy 50lb bags at the feed store.

I had the same problem in our #1000 all seasons. My son and i had to go through all of them and shovel the dust out. When I quit buying the cheap corn with weevils in it my problem went away.

It will kill the weavels, but it will also kill your deer if they eat too much of it. It is basically ground up sea shells, very abrasive and not good for the digestive system of deer.

Feed what you have left at an accelerated rate then wash the feeder out real good. After that set off a bug bomb in the feeder and wash it out again. This is what I did when my feed bins got weavels. After it dries fill it up and put a small amount of DE in there with the new corn. My feed bins were 6 tons each and I used 1 lb in them.

Yes BUT there’s a difference in pool grade and food grade.
