    Need Advice/Help

Okay so my oldest son and I are avid hunters. That being said I can count on one hand how many times I have actually gotten to take him hunting since I retired from the Army. With the going rate of leases that probably won't be in the cards for us. I've taken him to the LBJ grasslands to hunt and haven't even seen a deer out there. I remember hearing about a public land area that has good size deer here in texas but they only allow so many hunters for the year I just can't remember what it was called. Any help would be appreciated. I want to get this boy a deer to put on the wall not looking for a trophy but just something bigger than the basket 6 he shot for his first and only buck.

    Thanks and God Bless

I feel like you might be talking about Hagerman.

I thought about doing a YouTube series over texas public hunting. If I do, I will let you know.

Apply for every youth hunt you can.

In the 7 or 8 years I put my kid in, we drew at least 5. And I only put in for stuff we can't hunt on our family place

This will be my second or third year to put in for hunts. I put in for every youth hunt within driving distance for a day trip each time and we still haven't gotten drawn. Gonna try again this yr too.

We have driven up to Missouri in the past and camped out and hunted public land. Big bodied deer up there and the experience was awesome. Good luck o.p.

Is that for a draw hunt or just hunting public land?

What price range can I expect for the hunting side of the trip?

He stands a greater chance of being drawn in the TP&W draw hunts if you put him in for both the youth hunt. And the regular hunt. Don't expect quick success. There are lots of Dads doing it. But youth categories stand a better chance than the open regular categories.

LBJ is a hard place to hunt. It gets lots of pressure. And few deer. Harder now that baiting is no longer allowed. I've shot my share of them there, back when it was allowed. And focused on other public lands when baiting was banded. I still go once in a while, just for old times sake. Rules are being tightened up there as to muzzle loader's powder, and smooth bore shotguns only now. No more rifled barrel shottys. No more black powder pellets; loose powder only.

Edit: just read yor post above. I was writing while you were posting.

Kansas has lots of walk in public. Oklahoma does have some good places as well.

Just otc tags. Believe they were 50-75$ for out of state Tags. Beyond that we just camped by some public land and ventured out with our climber stands strapped to our backs.

Which hunts are you saying you put in for? TPWD youth draw hunts or the Texas Youth Hunting Program? Although affiliated there different entities. If it’s TYHP and you haven’t been successful that many times, this year put in for the hunt you choose and call them and let them know you have been trying for a couple of years without getting drawn. They don’t like hearing that and will more than likely get him in. Might be a different location but they try hard to get every kid at least a first time hunt scheduled. This all of course if your son hasn’t aged out.
