    Threaded wheel bearing dust cap

Went to repack grease on trailer bearings today on new to me trailer and worked for a long time to get the dust cap off with zero luck. Ends up it was threaded with male threads. Fine threads and 2” diameter. Messed up the threads and now need replacement. Anyone seen this before and any idea where I can get a replacement?

I'm definitely no help. I have never seen threaded hub caps before, all of mine are traditional tap in place.

Tap on it with a hammer as you screw it back in, or just drive it in with a hammer and then turn a quarter of a round. That one’s messed up, you have nothing to lose. It should last a long time.

Except if the threads in the hub are still good it would be much better to get a replacement cap!

NAPA Typically has them. Or get a matching size non threaded cap and install as normal

True, but I was just guessing that he screwed all the threads up knocking it off with a hammer.

I bent the outside in taking it off and tried to knock the dent out so it go back on without catching so the hub threads are still good.

They don’t have them and neither do any of the major trailer places. Talked to a guy at SW trailers who said they haven’t been made for 30-40 years. After some detailed google work found that they were used in Ford tractor front wheels from the mid 1920’-40’s. That post led me to find an antique tractor parts dealer that had a NIB pair for $18.

                      SCORE!!!

I was gonna say, you might try finding a match at an older tractor parts house. But looks like ya did it already with our LACK of help! Lots of the older 2wd tractors had threaded dust caps like that on the front axle. Then it would just be a matter of getting the right size, and thread. And true, those haven’t been on trailers in AWHILE! Good Huntin, and God Bless, Rusty

1920’s Ford tractor threaded dust cap (reproduction) fits like a champ!

I’m going to be packing wheel bearing tomorrow. My dad got stranded on the side of 59 today . Blow out with no spare . Went and grabbed two new rims and tire and put them on and brought my trailer home . When checking the hubs the felt like they need work . I have already pulled all the deck boards , re wired it and got all but the last board down today .
