Summer Activities in Angel Fire, Red River, Eagle Nest

We're camping for a week in Cimarron Canyon State Park with the kids (8 and 6).

We'll have fun camping, hiking, and fishing in the park. What are some activities the kids might enjoy in/near town? Maybe museums, shops, fun restaurant, zip lines, hot air balloons...open to just about anything.

    We'll be there late June.

There's a little bit of shopping in Eagle's Nest. Not much in Cimmaron. Red River has the most stuff to do in that area. Several shops, restaurants, etc. I don't know of any zip lines or balloon rides, but maybe there's some of that now. It's been a few years since I was there last.

        A couple of random thoughts.

Lunch or Dinner at the St. James Hotel in Cimarron.
We did a float fish trip down the Rio Grande and used the guys from Taos Fly Shop
Eagles Nest lake is supposed to have good fishing too.
There is more shopping in Red River - Red River Brewing was a cool spot
The town of Eagles Nest was pretty much shutdown Sunday - Thursday

Look to the West of Eagles Nest and found me a big bull on that Mountain!

Lots of ATV and Jeep trails
Bridge outside of Taos over the Rio Grande
Trout hatchery somewhere between Taos and Red River
Drive through Val Vidale (not sure I spelled that right) take a lunch and spend the day sight seeing

Has been too many years since we were there but we had fun

We own a place in Angel Fire. As stated, lots of fire there right now. Cimarron almost burned up, and the cooks peak fire made a real run at Angel Fire a couple weeks ago (thankfully the wind shifted) Just check it out before you head up..

Angel Fire resort has a great Zip line set up, and the golf course is awesome. Fishing in Eagle nest lake, and or Black lake in Angel Fire. Red River for a day for sure, rent a side by side and ride up to Goose Lake beautiful.

As Heath said, the St. James Hotel would be a good lunch adventure. Lots of old outlaws stayed there.

Stay where famous outlaws hung their hats. First built in 1872, many infamous outlaws have stayed at the St. James over the years, including Wyatt Earp, Jesse James, Buffalo Bill Cody, Annie Oakley, Billy the Kid and Thomas James Wright. Our historic hotel has 12 restored rooms where you can enjoy the simple but elegant ease […]

Also, go to the Vietnam Memorial/museum up on the hill, just north of Angel Fire...really a moving place and interesting story behind it. I highly recommend this.

Be sure to take the kids to the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, 10 miles NW of Taos, and just a mile or so further on Hwy 64 is Earthship Biotecture.

The Earthship Visitor Center We are Open! 2 Earthship Way, Tres Piedras, NM 87577   Self-Guided Tours available 7 days a week – 9am-4pm We close our doors at the times stated above so we do ask that you arrive at least 15 minutes prior to closing if possible $9 per adult Free for Taos locals and Earthship […]

While in Taos the kids might enjoy the Taos Pueblo.

We will be arriving in Angel Fire June 23rd and will be fishing June 27, 28, and 29th.

Thanks. The kids will love the bridge. I'll call the park before we go...last week of June.

Red River and Taos have good places to eat. We usually stay in Taos and fish around Red River and Eagle Nest. LOTS of good places to eat and shop in Taos. Michael's serves a great breakfast. It'll set you right before you head out to go fish or whatever. If you want Taos suggestions I can give you some but that is a pretty good haul from Cimmaron. You can hit just about any level of restaurant you want in Taos. We have had some fantastic meals there. The Rio Grande Gorge bridge north of Taos is cool. Worth a stop. There is a Kit Carson museum and the Taos Pueblo you can go check out.

Check out the little brewery right outside of Eagle Nest. Just north of there headed towards Red River. Commanche Creek Brewing. They have a great little place to go drink a couple of beers. We went there in the evenings after fishing and you could watch the elk coming down into the meadows while you sat out back and enjoyed a beer. Great end to the day.

Eagle Nest isn't much. I am sure it is growing and there may be more there now but last time I was there it was pretty limited as far as places to eat.

Red River has some cool places. The Red River Brewing Company is pretty nice. Big place. There are several other places. It's touristy so last time we stayed there I felt like you paid a premium for what you got and we got some pretty mediocre meals at a couple of Red River establishments. But it is a cool little town. Worth a visit. They have some different places that do jeep trail rides and stuff like that.

Plenty of good trout fishing up there for the kiddos in the streams if they can cast decently. They stock pretty often. Pay attention to the green or red Chile waters.
My buddy went late summer last year and got daily person limits of trout pretty easy.

As mentioned, Vietnam memorial is really neat and worth a drop by.

There is zip lines at Angel fire resort for sure. Haven’t been on but I spoke to one of the ski patrol guys on the chair lift who confirmed “ they are awesome. “

Angel fire has a brewery. I haven’t been to it in three years. But when I went the beer was fantastic and people were friendly. Most recent reviews show negative though, but take that with a grain of salt. Bring an empty growler or two and let them fill it up so you can have some back at camp.

Rio grande gorge bridge is something to see for sure. The history of Taos is also really interesting. If you or the kids are history buffs it’s great.

Lastly, enjoy some good New Mexican food. Taos has some good spots for sure….
