What tools to set t post ?

I have property between Del Rio and Sonora, I was wondering what is the best procedure to set t post and also say 3” pipe post ? There is probably about 6” of topsoil then you on rock, trying to see what works best.

If you don’t have the equipment to build fence in that country I’d say hire it done. Gonna need a truck auger and a strong back

I’ve rented a hammer drill in Del a Rio and done it. You can knock the plates off the t-post and drive them into the rock after its drilled

Yup this^^ My buddy and I set 40 posts on a 20 panel feedpen with one. The rock drill rental made it much easier compared to beating them down with a tpost driver in the shale below the 6" of dirt. . The hardest part was knocking off the flat plates on the tposts.

Yep, this. If your going to be doing this every often you can buy a heavy duty hammer drill from Northern Tool for about $150. That’s where I got mine. It’s worked great. 1 1/4” bit is perfect for t posts. My son and I can knock out the t posts for a 12 panel feed pen in less than 45 minutes. That’s 24 posts.

How many holes did you drill per bit?

Nice. We did the air rock drill and compressor like Millman. Was planning on a long day and it made quick work out of it. But.... I kinda like the idea of having one around if we need it at all times. Already have the generator. Sounds like yours made quick work out of it as well. Appreciate the heads up.

I definitely appreciate these replies, I have a couple roto hammer drills will get 1 1/4 bit to test on feed pen t post. Thought on using electric jack hammer then try to drive t post in ?
And then on pipe post jack hammer clean out hole, concrete in ?

I’m still on my original bit and I would guess we have drilled Somewhere between 150 and 200 holes. It’s limestone which is soft. Not like drilling thru cement.

I brought a hammer drill to Del Rio twice, '92 and '93. Neither of those beauties were impressed.

And yes, my teenage arse tried to knock the plates off the T-posts and drive them straight into the rock. But I'll live the rest of my life convincing myself that those seemingly unimpressed hookers still think of me from time to time. Money well-spent!
