    Downsizing after Retirement

Who has basically sold out and took to the road after retirement. Nothing really keeping us in current place after that. Base camp will be in the POC Barndo in the summer. And deer lease in the winter. Travel in between. And mooch off the kids.!!!

I have known some who did it, some loved it some hated it. My only advice is plan for when you can't do it anymore. I know a few couples who have nothing but their truck and camper with no home base. If something bad happens I hope one of their kids can help give them a place.
If you have some place to hold up when you get road tired that will help. My brother in law had a friend who sold everything and bought a motor home, 6 months and they were done. They sold the motor-home and bought a home and had to refurnish it. I guess it's not for everyone. My wife and I thought about it once, we are homebodies and it's nice to get away but there is no place like home. Our plan was to have a homebase we could just lock up, hit the road and come back when we were ready, sounded good but we just couldn't pull the trigger. If you can try it before you fully commit that's probably the best way. Good luck regardless of your decision.

No reason to downsize if you never upsized.

        Now that makes sense.

Do you even have to take them with you?

Thinking the same thing. I've got a 7,500 VRBO with living quarters on the market. Looking forward to hitting the road when she sells. Had a serious buyer look today.

I’m working on this plan now. Still have 4 yrs left, but plan is in the works. My Dad and Step Mom hit the road at retirement for about 6 years. They cover the US, Canada, Mexico and a few months in Europe. They had a great time. She missed having a nest. He would hit the road today at 77. You having the place in POC may cover this need. I plan to leave Texas about July travel to hunt somewhere in the mid- west and hopefully Alaska. Return back to hunt Texas in Nov. hit the coast for spring and early summer fishing. Repeat as long as I can

Never upsized either. You only upsize to keep up with the jones's. Put the money in the bank and investments and retire early.

I am getting close to this..single and no kids so my life is way more flexible than most. I plan on selling 90% of my crap and getting a class a or c and traveling for a few years. I do have my dad and brother so will still have a real place to sleep when I am visiting home. Plan is to spend a 3-6 months a year in Cozumel scuba diving and the rest of the year seeing all the stuff I never got to see because I was too busy working.

I’ve lived my life on the road…it gets old.

I could go the rest of my life and never spend another night in an rv or an rv park and be just fine

have millions of frequent flyer miles, and very few places I want to go besides home to Texas.

                        Yep.

Plan for what you’ll do when your tires wear out.

We are thinking about keeping the smallest house for a base station and renting the other two out for income. I can come home on the first of the month to remind them it’s rent time.

“Upsizing” is relative to what you expect/have. I own 2 4,000+ sf houses, one I live in, other on the coast, feel like I’m “downsized” compared to my 10,000 sf friends/family, am I right? My cousin lives in a rv and a skiff between Port Isabel and Key West, he downsized? It’s all relative, careful where you cast stones.
