    My random hunting story...

I think you would agree that some of our greatest hunting memories involve our kids. My now 33 year old son was 14 and decided since he had already killed one with a shotgun, he wanted to kill a turkey with his bow. I explained how difficult it could be but he was determined. I set a pop-up in a creek bottom pasture the afternoon before and we crawled in just before first light. As the sky started to turn pink in the east I raised my binoculars and could see turkeys roosting in a dead tree about 150 yards away. We had three decoys 15 yards in front of the blind. I started with some soft purrs and soft yelps. Two gobblers flew out of the tree and made a beeline right to us. At 30 yards they turned and circled behind us and the gobbling stopped. The next 10 minutes seemed like an eternity. Then they started drumming right next to the blind! They were so close I could see their shadows through the fabric of the blind. One hung up but the other strutted right out into the decoys. I looked over at my son - he was pie-eyed and was breathing so hard his mask was puffing in and out. He finally snapped out of it, drew his bow and took the shot - a pass through that knocked him down. But then he jumped up and took off like Usain Bolt! Both wings were broken so he couldn’t get airborne - not knowing what else to do I jumped out of the blind and took off after him. I fell kinda silly thinking I could run down a turkey but when I started gaining on him at 50 yards I knew he was hurt bad. He laid down at about 100 yards and I stepped on his neck to finish it. My son still laughs uncontrollably telling the story of watching me chase that gobbler.
For his first turkey ( shotgun) I mounted the tail, beard and spurs for him along with a picture
