I've only shot two with a rimfire outside a trap....both at around 50ish and both behind the ear. One was a 22 mag and one was a 17HMR. The light switch flipped off immediately.
We’ve got a feeder set up at 125 yds. It’s the only caliber I use for that feeder. I’ve shot a few handfuls of hogs with shots right behind the ear hole at that feeder. The furthest being about 138 yds. None of them have taken a step. The 20 gr XTP works the best from my experience.
Absolutely.
During deer season, I was also toting my 17hmr to the stand with me to ear hole pigs so I wouldn’t waste rifle rounds during the ammo shortage.
I’ve got a 17 WSM being built right now for my boy, and it’ll replace my HMR for this purpose though. He’s 2, so daddy will get a year or two of killing out of the way with it first lol
I've been wanting to ask this same question, but 'esoct25' beat me to it. I always wondered what my .17 would be good for besides coons and rabbits. Now I know !!
My .17 HMR with Sparrow Suppressor on it is pretty much the only rifle I shoot nowadays. I have killed hogs, javelinas, foxes, bobcats, coyotes and even shot some axis does with it. All the axis does I have shot between the eyes or behind the ear. Hogs and javis I typically shoot in the head and have killed them out to 150 yards. Bobcats and coyotes I have killed dead shooting them behind the shoulder before, but prefer a neck shot if possible.
