    San Saba river float

I’m looking for advice and info on kayaking the San Saba river west of town (San Saba).

    Entry and exit points
    Things to take and consider
    Length of floats
Richland Springs, algerita, Harkeyville and San Saba

    Any help is appreciated.

Don’t know that I’d float that little river. Pretty muddy at times and catches a lot of fertilizer run off.

There are lots of places that you would have to portage on that section of the river. If you are interested in floating the town let me know. I've got access to the river in Harkeyville and then again in the middle of town and wouldn't mind floating it with you. Could float from 4-10 miles, depending on where we get out.

There really is not much public access on the river at all. If you are looking to truly float, you'd have to map out where there is just bridges or low water crossings to have a truck parked off the road or a buddy meet and pick you up. Best place to just put a kayak in if you wanna paddle a little up river and "float" back down it is the low water crossing off CR 350. Not sure on the water levels, but the past couple of years, I would have called it a drag trip not a float trip.

The fishing report from a private lake in San Saba County said it was down seven feet and had been closed due to low water levels. Don't know about the river water levels now. LCRA has river monitors that report flow rates there. https://hydromet.lcra.org/Reports/RiverStageFlow

            Thanks for the info everyone.

I realize the water level will determine how much float or drag we do.

Looking at site casting and running some catfish lines.

Wonder if o could float from Richland springs all the way to town in one day?

All depends on water flow. Lots of opportunities if you can get a shuttle. I have seen more moccasins on the San Saba river than anywhere else.

The last time I floated a section it was very slow going. I only went a few miles in a canoe. I think Richland Springs to town would be a long long day, unless the river was super high.

Jscott, thx for heads about snakes.

Yes…I’m thinking a trip from Richard springs to town might be too much. The river has a lot of bends and prolly will take longer than I realize. Plus trying to fish will make it a slower float.

Has anyone done a float in this area..?

It's gonna be hard to find an appropriate length to float without having some private access to put in at. It's better fishing than most people realize, paddled up and down that river in the summer since I was in Middle School.

On most Texas rivers, I like to put in between 4 and 6 miles a day if I'm fishing heavy and have done as much as 11 n average water flow while still getting some fishing in. As TheGrouse said, the San Saba is going to run slower so take that into consideration. Google earth let's you measure distance with one of the tools. If I'm exploring a river for the 1st time, I normally pick a place that I can paddle up/down and spend the morning fishing a certain stretch. Then I spend a couple hours driving the different crossings for future options.

There are barbed wire fences across the river in Voca. Is the river completely passable or is some of it private?

Red dog- do you recall the baits that produced?
