I bought MASA right when covid hit when I was working down in St. Croix. I wanted off that island if I got sick or got hurt.

They all suck and will try to screw you. They claim they fall under FAA pricing rules for airfare. That’s why they charge so much. Your insurance company will only pay them the equivalent of a comparable ambulance ride. They will then come after you for the rest of the balance. They will charge at least 15k just to start the helicopter. You can get memberships, but there is no guarantee that you will be picked up by that same carrier. Some have different flight rules depending on weather and that company may already be on a trip at the time. Some companies offer reciprocal membership agreements between companies and some don’t. Make sure other carriers in your area will accept the membership before buying one. The best bet is to just not let them fly you. There are few instances that it’s really needed and most of the time it’s not really faster than ground transport. Unfortunately in rural areas they sometimes want to fly you just so they don’t have to leave the county to transfer you to a higher level of care.

This is what we have for me and the wife. I paid for 3 years at once and got a little cheaper. I think it is about time to reup again.

Do these air services offer some sort of guarantee?

Like if you pay for the service for a particular area then need it and they are busy elsewhere and a regular ambulance ends up coming out to get you.

MASA covers both air and ground transport.

It is about time for me to re-up. It really is pretty cheap coverage for the cost that you would incur if you don't have anything. I am curious though, has anyone had to use Life Flight or air ambulance, whatever you want to call it and used the insurance. I am curious how it went and if there was any issues, etc. I do know that if you don't have anything, it costs a ton just to start up the helo and if I recall, most normal insurances won't cover it.

MASA will cover you across most of the globe. It can also fly a family member to you and help with their expenses. They have monthly fees too or just a lump sum. Air or ground is all covered. It will help with young kids/grandkids up to age 14 I think.

CareFlight would not land until an ambulance was on site for us several years ago. They wanted ground personnel to verify it was safe to land. We were in an open dirt parking lot at a motocross track. They then would only cover the portion my insurance didn’t cover. While it didn’t cost me anything I was ****** they didn’t fully cover the cost. Guess I didn’t read the fine print how it worked.

I recently found out that it takes a paramedic or some other medical professional with authorization to call in a life flight helicopter. We only have one ambulance in our county and it may be on another call when I need help. Even if they are not on a call, it is volunteer, so the response time will be a minimum of thirty minutes. I can do a lot of bleeding out in thirty minutes and can't call in the air ambulance. Seems like some folks are just screwed. We have been paying for life flight insurance every year. I now assume that is a waste of money.

Yeah kinda stupid a ground crew has to call in a air ambulance, the oil company emergency helicopter pad was by my camp and couple times we got to have a front row seat to watch someone die waiting for the ambulance to arrive
I am still keeping my global rescue policy in place though just in case

A bunch when the eagleford shale drilling boom was going full speed
the dead ones are most memorable

guy got hit with a cheater bar opening up a high pressure valve that completely knocked off his bottom jaw
another that had a 2 inch nut dropped on his head from the top of the rig and went straight through his hard hat and lodged in his head
couple guys that got crushed by stuff falling off trucks while unloading

one hunter who got crushed by a falling 20ft deer stand while he was trying to stand it up

80 miles ( 25 of dirt ) from Laredo is a long wait for a ground ambulance to come declare it worthy of a air ambulance
