    Obo?

Why do people list things in the classifieds for $1000 or best offer then refuse to negotiate when you offer $900? Makes no sense.

Maybe they want the best offer? Not the first lowball.

Maybe he wants $914 and a 6 pack?

Happens everywhere. I've offered 1% less on an ebay item that was OBO, and they declined. In many cases, it's just a ploy to generate interest.

Perhaps some don’t even know what “obo” means, they just put it on because they see others do it.

          Lol at “makes no sense”

It makes perfect sense for the seller. They already have you for $900 if they want to sell it. All they have to do is wait on a better offer. The seller most likely isn’t in a hurry to make less money.

OBO literally means your best offer. You low balled him and then hoped to negotiate further. Now you’re mad he didn’t counter offer. That tells me it wasn’t truly your best offer to begin with.

He has your best offer and apparently doesn’t like it.

Maybe he needs more time to make sure no one will pay asking price before going through the negotiating process?

This…if the listing is new, the seller is waiting to see if he gets his asking price.

He may already have an offer greater than $900 or may have a higher floor with OBO than you offered.

To me, OBO means that the buyer will accept the best offer made within a reasonable length of time.

However, very few sellers are going to tell you what their idea of reasonable time is.

This. I think 99% of the people who list OBO either don't mean it or don't know what it means and definitely don't communicate a timeframe for entertaining best offers.

Yep. So often when I sell something (eBay, Craigslist, FB Marketplace, etc.), a prospective buyer will ask 'what is the lowest you will take'?
Well, I've put forth a price, if you want to negotiate, give me your price. Why would I automatically go the lowest I would take?
So, my standard response to 'what is the lowest you will take' is 'what is the most you will pay'? I guess that irks them, because most don't respond further.

OBO basically means "I want full price, and will fight for it. But, there is a chance that if I do not get full price after a certain amount of time, then I will consider the person who offered the highest price if it reasonable".

Maybe you can do better at negotiating than you can at whining about OBO

I like the approach of asking the price you want then dropping the price with the bumps- TTT's- if the asking price isn't garnering interest.
