TPWD's Alan Cain on Opening Gun Seasons In Collin, Grayson, Dallas and Rockwall Count

As a resident of Collin County, I clearly have very strong feelings about Texas Parks and Wildlife's proposal. Here is what Alan Cain had to say in our interview regarding why TPWD is pushing for these regulatory changes

With the population growth that's a bad idea

I don't understand TPWD pushing this. We need to fight this tooth and nail

When they start pushing something their decision has pretty much been made.

I also consulted for the same client as Dr. Jacobsen if you would like direct input.

I was also on the Chad Jones Buck lease.

Here is what I heard from Cain paraphrasing ( my thoughts in parenthesis)- When the State of Texas opened up hunting in Greyson Co in 1999, it was previously closed in 1961 then archery only in the 80s was allowed only on Hagerman Refuge, there was no BIOLOGICAL reason to make it archery only at that time. Reason for current petition is the difficulty in managing high fence ranches in Greyson Co and surrounding counties by archery alone (My .02- seems reasonable and I can attest trying to conduct a proper MLD program/ or any management program through archery only is almost impossible). Other similar urban sprawl areas in Texas that allow rifle hunting are not encountering the expressed fear being cited as a reason to not allow. Landowners can self restrict method used. State of Texas is not in the business of managing Trophy deer, only interest in age structure (insert AR here). Maybe allow rifle only for MLD properties.

Commenter thoughts- All current Greyson Co and Colin Co hunters don't want the change (maybe, maybe not-not sure of the data available here). That these counties routinely produce 200" bucks (by inference bc of bowhunting-low harvest rates=mature deer. If this is the goal of the STATE of Texas, then why not make the whole state archery only ??) If you allow rifle season, then less 200" will get killed bc young bucks will be shot. (what stops that from happening by bowhunters as long as they abide by the antler restriction in these counties?) He agrees that landowners being restricted by harvest means in a valid point.

Lastly my thoughts- I don't agree that only folks that reside in these counties should have input/decision making power. It is a State of Texas issue. Not every person HUNTING these counties reside in those counties. My impression, although I lack data, would tell me I bet that lots of hunters in those areas don't reside there.

So a few mld high fence ranches can't kill their deer numbers because of bow only. Why not allow those high fence ranches to rifle hunt? It doesn't impact the rest of the county. Will Hagerman have a rifle hunt? That would only increase the harvests and decrease the chances of getting drawn on a hunt. It would be shot out in a few years unless they severely limited the number of hunters. This is not good for bowhunters.

The deer herd up here in Grayson isn’t exactly spectacular in numbers. It’s not like some places where you see deer every sit. I can sit a week sometimes and not see a deer. But there is that chance a booner walks out eventually is why I sit. The places I’ve hunted up here and farm land surrounding just now seems to be increasing in numbers. You let rifle hunters come to town you can kiss that goodbye. Most average deer hunters only care about if it had antlers or not and filling tags. They don’t think about deer management. Brown it’s down. I hope they at least do some deer surveys before they make a decision. I’m all for high MLD places that have had surveys down rifle hunting. That has actual research done to come up with harvestable specs. But let’s be honest. They don’t care what we think. What do we know being in the actual woods hunting theses ghosts.[emoji2373]

Definitely sounds like the interest of a few over the interest of most. Can they not pass regulation for some sort of special rule for these counties for HF MLD properties so as not to hurt the LF hunting quality? That guy did not like when cable brought up that scenario about having to pay state civil restitution on a high fence deer, whats good for the goose TPW...

Exactly, it will turn into Fannin County 2.0.

I think rifle season would be a safety issue. If you drive around those counties the population densities are increasing daily. The habitat is small, limited to creek drainages. Most of those counties are housing and hay fields with wooded creek drainage in between. TPWD needs to keep it archery only.
