Might order a truck, never done it before

So my wife and I have decided that after several different types of new vehicles that we’ve bought over the years, we are always the happiest with a truck. Since it is getting close to time to purchase a new vehicle, we want a truck with what we want on it and will keep it for the long haul.

So ordering a new truck with exactly what we want and nothing we don’t want seems like the best option, but we’ve never done that before, so I’d like some advice of those that have.

We are well aware that if we were to order a new truck soon that it could be months before we got it. What I don’t know is how do you go about that process? How do you find the right dealership to work with? Is there anything to watch out for when ordering? I read on here to make sure the price is locked in on the paperwork so the price can’t go up, but does that also stop any potential rebates from being applied later?

Any information on this and anything else that I might not know about would be appreciated.

    Here is the truck we would like;

    Ram 1500 crew cab 5’7” bed 4WD 5.7 Hemi
    Lone star
    33 gallon fuel tank
    3.92 gears
Interior package that includes heated seats
    Ram boxes
Delmonico red, or maybe Granite Crystal paint

From what I have heard ram will not have the 5.7 available for the new trucks in 22 and possibly 23. Supply issues. Other than that you just shop dealers and give them your wants and get best price. Of course prices are different now with the mess we are in . Still can get some trucks lower than MSRP if you do your homework.

I just sold that exact truck to every spec except mine was white. Great truck, good luck!

I bought this truck off the lot, minus the color and larger fuel tank. Previous truck I bought was ordered. Sat down, ordered what I wanted, and negotiated from there. After we came to an agreement, I asked them what their cash price was. And then we started all over again......

I’m guessing you could probably find that truck on a lot or by dealer transfer

I have searched a VERY broad area and found zero just like this over the last several months. It’s easy to find one in this spec if it doesn’t have the Ram boxes. A large majority of the trucks with the Ram boxes are either Long Horn, Laramie, or Limited trim models which come with features, and a price tag that we don’t want.

First off, screw Ram, go Ford. Kidding if you like Ram go with it. I just took delivery of my F150 a few months ago, it took them 4 months to build it. For Ford, and I believe Ram is the same, you should be locked into the price of your build, but if the rebates/incentives are better when you take delivery you will get those instead, its a win win for you. You are most likely going to have to get stuff you didn't want, they all package things you want with expensive things you don't want. As for a dealer, look up reviews for ones around you and go off of those if you don't have a preferred dealer around you. Also look up their current vehicles and make sure they aren't pricing over MSRP.

Bluebonnet Jeep/Ram in New Braunfels is an awesome dealer I have done a few deals with. Not sure on how they are doing orders or pricing since the pandemic. You should expect to pay invoice price or maybe below if you order. At least that is the way Ford is doing it right now with most dealers. Do not let anyone charge you over MSRP.

Is Rambox even a option on lower packages? May not be until you get to Laramie.

I have a red Rebel with all that but the ram boxes i might sell soon. Might want to research the ram boxes. Not many people are happy with them. Apparently they leak and have issues with the latches keeping them closed.

I've never been on Dodge/Ram website, but I have ordered a Ford before, based on the exact specs I chose in their "Build Your Vehicle" feature on their website. I'm sure most all manufacturers have the same. As stated earlier, it can be a little frustrating and eye opening to see how they choose to bundle options. But it will also give you a really good idea of which options you may want to pursue as after market so you don't end up paying for bundled options you don't care to pay for. I also use the build feature when shopping for a new truck on the lot. I can build what I want, and Ford will check local inventories (up to 100 miles) and show me available trucks that most closely match my build. Sure beats calling dealerships or running all over town looking at inventory.

To the OP...Send me a PM...
I just ordered a 1500 RAM Lonestar 4x4 and took delivery already 8-10 weeks upon order. I order a new one every three years...

The primary reason with going with Ram is due to seat comfort. I’ve got a bad case of dystonia in my feet which is an involuntary muscle contraction. Basically it’s like severe muscle cramps that are neurologically based so things that stop muscle cramps have no effect on them. Well, uncomfortable seats can trigger them, and when the cramps start they last for hours.

Drove a Dodge Charger R/T with leather interior and power seats. 30 minutes later I was cramped up.
Drove a Honda Pilot Touring with leather and power seats. 3 hours later I would be cramped up.
Drove a Ram 1500 Lonestar with power seats and could drive it for 7-8 hours.

I’ve learned that if I am not comfortable in a seat as soon as I sit down then it won’t work for me. There are only about 3 or 4 vehicles that I can drive for an extended period and be comfortable, and each one I was immediately comfortable as soon as I sat in it.

So it’s more of a medical necessity to have to go with a Ram truck.

My father-in-law went online and spec'd a dodge out exactly like he wanted it, then hit the dealer search button. A dealer not too far away had one exactly like it on the way. He had it in a couple of weeks. Maybe you will get lucky.
