    USDA Farming and Ranching Survey

We received one of these surveys this year.

This is the first year that my Mom and I have owned our land…my Grandparents gift deeded to us in late 2020.

Other than e-mails/phone calls, is there any downside to filling out the survey?

I’m sure several on here have experience with this.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Go ahead and fill it out, you will not get any emails or phone calls, any any other contacts. It is simply to compile statics. No down side.

if you do not fill it out often you will get phone calls and sometimes a visit in person if you ignore the phone calls

most farmers on agtalk (site seems to be down today) either fill out least some of it leaving off the financials and other parts they feel the government has no business sharing with "the markets" (and foreign buyers to help them make buying decisions) or they write "none of your business" on most or all of it and mail it back in to avoid the calls and visits

some just trash it and ignore the calls and never seem to get a visit....some get the visit and tell them go away

technically if you are in any type of farm "program" you are suppose to fill it out, but that never seems to matter

I got it one year, tossed it in the trash. Never got another nor any calls or visits. I only do hay though so maybe their focused more on actual farms.

Can anyone name one thing honest working people could write down in a survey that would be used for good?

^^ This. Technically, you are required by law to submit it, but you do not have to answer all of the questions. I don't know the repercussions of not completing it, though.

This survey helps decide where the government puts their focus on from Farm Bill funds. For example, if the honey bees are in rapid decline, they might allocate more funds to apiaries to protect the bees and for research to improve their health. Or say drought has consumed, oh I don't know, 1/3 of the country and 90% of that is prime meat and grain production, perhaps drought and wildfire emergency aid or rebuilding funds will be available?

This! Most serious farmers/ranchers will comply because they know it can help them in the long run.

The farm bill and allocation of funding is heavily weighted on these type of surveys. On the ground information is always best. We do ours and also give suggestions GOOD and BAD on what is being missed or omitted.
