    Jayton Tx

Just joined a lease in the Jayton area anyone have any insight on the area out that way? Good or bad? This particular lease is a friend of mine his dad has had the property since 1979! Seems like a great group of guys they have some tight management rules but nothing I can't abide by. This property is 6800 acres split by 2 counties. Looking forward to moving my stuff from Throckmorton out a little further west!

We almost bought a place on the Stonewall/Kent county line NE of Jayton several years ago. Pretty place with Croton Creek on it & a big neighbor.

We ended up not making an offer after I talked to some hunters who hunted the immediate area. Maybe their places were just over hunted, but it didn't sound like the average buck quality in the area was what we were looking for.

I am sure if the lease is big enough, and managed correctly, you will have nice ones.

I hunted that area between jayton and spur for two years. I joined a group that had been out there for 20+ years, and after my second year on the place, the heirs had a falling out and 2/3 of the 13,000 acres sold.

It was good, game rich country. we saw plenty of hogs, deer, dove, quail and predators. That said, the antler quality was more impacted by rain than any other lease I have ever been on. On a wet year, a few 160's might be taken. On a dry year, you were hunting hard to scratch out a 140" buck. The property had water piped throughout, but natural surface water was hard to come by. I would say to focus heavy on being near water if you are hunting that country. And make sure to always have a shotgun handy, as the quail can be phenomenal!

We aren't far from there kinda between Jayson and spur and we love it. Some great deer and genetics in the area not a ton of numbers but better than I thought it would be. Deer dove Pigs and a few turkeys where we are. Sounds like they are pretty management minded which you need to be out that way.

I am just south of the Kent county line in Fisher co. Shoot me a pm with more specifics on where you are and I will share what I know. We have 960 acres of family land we are pretty selective on what we shoot but have good whitetail, mule deer and some Aoudad a plethora of hogs.

My dad lives there. He's been THE coyote hunter there since he was a kid. We get to hunt several hundred thousand acres around there. Some places produce very nice deer. He fills feeders and traps hogs for alot of folks/hunters out there.

It's hit and miss. Anywhere along with river with a big hunk of land and good management will grow big deer every year. If your density is high you won't see or shoot as many good bucks. If your running a deer every 40 acres kill the junk and let the others get age 150s are common. Also I wouldn't get on a rifle lease out there if the place is running more than a hunter every 750 acres. The heavily managed places are running a guy every 1k acres. I was a lease manager on 9k acres out there for several yrs before I bought my own place 2 yrs ago. We killed and saw some big deer but we put alot of effort into it. We were on the nw side of the county south of spur west of Jayton on the river by the gas plant

You Will see more quality than quantity. I was on a lease outside spur for 7 years. A 150 plus got shot 5 of the 7 years. We never had 2 shot in the same year. It can be hard to manage for age. Lots of small parcels with lots of rifles.
