    Lab Retriever training questions

Bought a pup last may/June to eventually replace my lab I hunt with now.

I chose this pup because he was the biggest and the bully out of the bunch. I was hoping he would be fearless like my hunting lab is and was a pup. He’s everything but that.

He’s progressing in his training quite well. I’ll go so far to say he’s 4-6?months ahead of the dog I hunt with now when he was that age.

The problem is, he’s very skittish. He’s a great family dog: a big ol lug who loves to be loved on and thinks he’s a lap dog.

One of the main issues I have is when you go to pet him sometimes, he cowards and pees himself.

We’ve had him since he was a pup. He’s never been abused. Heck, he sleeps in the bed with me.

Only thing I can think of is every now and then, my 10 year old lab “checks” him from time to time. He’s getting to be grumpy in his old age most of the time, he doesn’t wanna be bothered by an energetic puppy.

Question is, what do I need to do to break him of that? It’s been pretty bad this past week.

I’m scared to pet him and I’m tired of mopping up urine.

    Brotha needs some guidance.

Another thing, this dog drinks so much water, we have to cut him off.

I’m taking him to vet to see if he has kidney issues.

My buddy Wade Cashion owns Texas Duck Dogs and is based out of the Valley View area. Look him up on FB under Texas Duck Dogs. Training isnt cheap, but maybe he can help you out, or point you in the right direction.

I have a dog from Wade’s kennel and couldn’t speak highly enough about their operation. I’ve self-trained her but know that I’m the weak link when it comes to her performance/ability.

In my experience, the peeing/cowering thing is a puppy thing they grow out of fairly quickly. My current lab pup did that for a short time and it drove me nuts and made me actually want to swat him when he peed on the floor.

I would agree. My last lab did that as well. I think she just got excited about everything and let loose on the floor. She grew out of it and was a great retriever.

May be diabetic. That’s one of the signs.
