Cross through my gate onto private property to knock on my door unannounced and univited and you are probably already starting at no with only the chance of things getting worse from there.

I've had it happen a few times and hate being caught off guard when I'm well off the public roadway. Regardless of how silver-tongued the visitor is, I'm already in defensive mode assuming you're another methhead there to case the place and see if anyone was home or a poacher acting all charming to try to figure out if I'm a non-resident landowner and/or how frequent my presence is.

I know it is what all the web and magazine articles say to do, but showing up looking in the windows / knocking on my door in the middle of nowhere unnanounced is the absolute most surefire way to ensure that the answer is no and I'm going to be memorizing your face, vehicle, and writing down the plates.
I feel the exact same way.

Put me in the category of not wanting people to show up unannounced at my house asking to use what's mine, no matter how well they word it and how nice a person they are. I'd much rather receive a phone call or a letter. It's a little different if it's not a stranger. I have a coworker and she and her husband are interested in prepping a small part of my property to dove hunt next year. I'm cool with it, but there's no way i'd agree to a stranger coming out and doing what they're planning. The neighbor has some pretty gnarly stuff next door, and a little research and a facebook message was enough for me to gain hunting privileges on their property. They don't live there, and only ask that we keep an eye on it. Easy enough.

Plus I'm not sure I want just any old somebody that wants to deer hunt, running around my cattle pens when I'm trying to work them....in fact I KNOW I don't.
