Need small wild pig for Forensic Science class

I am a Forensic Science teacher at a school in the northeast Houston area. I usually trap a small pig each year for the kids to watch (and smell) decompose over time for the Death and Decomposition chapter. However, due to new fencing around my families small acreage property our pigs have pretty much disappeared and I am hoping to rely on the TBH family to help me acquire a small (around 30-40 lbs) fresh dead pig in the next few weeks. I will be willing to drive a little ways to the east, north, and possibly northwest of Houston to meet anyone who could provide a pig for the class. I will be in the Huntsville area a fair amount in the next month also. If anyone can and is willing to help these suburban high school kids get to experience the joys of a decomposing pig you can contact me at rustraylor@hotmail.com

    Thank you,

    Russell Traylor

Have you considered the body farm at Sam Houston to see if they have a day program?

So you want a whole pig or a gutted one? I'm at my lease until Tuesday and traps are set so might be able to get you one.

I need a whole pig. I will put it in a cage in a wooded area where the kids can watch it decompose to see the various stages of decomposition. I usually trap them and keep them in a pen until the night before the kids will first see it. I then kill it as late in the evening as I can to keep it as fresh of a kill as possible when the kids start observing it. The students return to school on Tuesday. I appreciate any and all help.

That would be a blast. However, field trips cost money and taking 150 students would be very expensive. Schools do not seem to have the money to spend on things like they did 20 years ago.

No guarantee, but I might be able to help you out next weekend.

We have a few sows with at least 13 small ones running with them at the moment, showing up at a couple of different feeders multiple times during daylight hours.

I’m going up next Friday and I’m going to try to knock down at least one sow along with any of the small ones I can manage. Let me know if that works, will be coming back fairly early next Saturday and Huffman isn’t too far off from my way back. Pretty sure we could make the handoff work.

Sounds great. Just let me know. I will pm you my contact. I will likely be on Lake Conroe Sunday for part of the day. If you hunt in Leon County like your profile says I could likely meet you on I-45.

Your students are fortunate to have a teacher like you who does so much hard work to educate them. God bless all Texas teachers!
