Who has done a multi day float trip on the White/Buffalo River in Arkansas? Who did you use? What did you think? Suggestions?
Starting to make plans for late spring/early summer.
Haven't done a multi-day, but floated the Buffalo and it's great. Peace and quiet. Great scenery.
I'll add this note: if you are looking for a "wooo hoo hold my beer in the air", the Buffalo isn't that type of float in my experience. More of a soak in nature place. Not sure about the White. I'm sure @rjet can give you some info.
Floating, hiking, camping... Buffalo River Outfitters offers a complete Ozark adventure vacation. We provide canoes, kayaks, rafts and shuttle service for floating the Buffalo National River, and have clean and cozy lodging options that are unmatched in the area. Whether you want to float the river, hike nearby trails, go horseback riding, or simply relax on a porch swing and enjoy the fresh air, we've got the place for you.
A buddy and I did a multi day float trip on the Buffalo and White rivers, but it was 1987. I probably still have the “outfitter” info, but it’s going to be in a box in the attic.
I’m sure a lot has changed since then, but it was a great trip.
a buddy of mine and i did a 2 day trip on the White, below Bull Shoals when we graduated high school. Spillway was open when we started, the river was really moving. We stopped to camp, tied up the boat. When we woke up the next morning, the gates had been closed and boat was at least 20' from the river, glad it was not other way around....lol It was a blast, but long time ago
It's been 35 yrs. but we really enjoyed the two day trip on the upper Buffalo on the part of the river that has some whitewater to deal with. We booked our trip with Lost Valley Canoe Service in Ponca, Ark. They provided shuttle ser. for drop off and pick-up, canoes, paddles, and life vests. At the time there were cabins, RV parking, and camping available also. March thru June is the main season because of the water levels. Too high the river is shut down, and too low you will drag bottom quite a bit and have to walk your canoe to deeper water. It was a blast though. I wouldn't personally recommend this for small children due to the nature of w/w canoeing although we saw folks who were a lot more proficient than we were with their children. Pack your gear (towels, cameras, etc.) in waterproof dry packs and strap them in as it's a very high probability of getting wet.
So really it depends on when you do it, during spring the water is flowing good from all the rain, by mid summer a kayak will drag in low spots, as for the white it depends on if they open the gates, water level and flow rate fluctuates alot depending on whether they open the dam or not, we just use kayaks loaded to the gills with camping gear, but come prepared, Arkansas weather can change in 5 minutes, it can go from a nice spring day to a flashflood in no time
Ive done the trip on the Buffalo/White almost every year for the last 30ish years. It is the one trip my youngest kids absolutely look forward to every year (12 and 7 now). We’ve used Wild Bill Outfitters for canoe rentals/shuttle service every time….Super easy! You’re welcome to PM and I can give you all the details.
