The older I get the more I feel the same. I’ve gotten real picky about what I shoot.

Iam feeling yea man, I don’t hunt nearly as much as I used to. It’s far to much “ work” anymore. I have taken to fly fishing more then hunting now days, still work but not as hard of work. I am sure in time it will become “ hard labor” also. Cheers to the older gents that still have the drive ! A lot of mine is no buddy to hunt with anymore also, kinda makes it “ harder”.

I think a lot of it too is that I treat it like a job. I still have fun obviously but if I come out empty handed I don't look at it like an animal ran off. I look at it as if money just ran off, because the fact of it is that for me it did. So getting frustrated is easy at times. I'd compare it to watching a target buck you've had on camera staying just out of bow range, winding you and running off, getting killed by the neighbor the next property over or getting a shot and wounding it. I get that same feeling often. So putting pressure on myself to not only get a shot opportunity lined up but to make a perfect shot each and every time is part of it. That in itself can be exhausting. But that's a part of hunting I think we can all relate to maybe. If you put your money and time into something you kind of have to have that mindset I think. When you eat, sleep and breathe huntin you can become your own worst enemy.

A few years back I was really confused when a friend of mine declined an offer to start working for another buddy of mine guiding hunts. I couldn't believe he did that. He said he didn't want something he loves to become work because he hates work. He hunts because it's something he enjoys doing. He works because he has to. I understand where he was coming from when he said that. And that's part of the reason why I stopped doing coyote calling contest all the time. Having money on the line can create problems between friends. I've seen it happen. Fortunately it didn't happen to me but in a competitive environment like that it can happen.

I get the same way, feel like I have to go from sun up to sundown, I think it will make an old man out of you before your time. Slow and steady wins the race, it's hard to adjust but worth it. I even have a hard time sitting still on vacation, feel like I should be doing something.......it's a battle.
It definitely is a battle. It's hard to not get out there when you know you can. Nothing is stopping you but yourself. Everything I've ever put effort into I went full steam ahead. Always have been like that. It's hard to flip that switch to a different mode even when I'm not feeling good for some reason or another. My mindset hasn't changed ever. But sometimes my mind has more get up and go than my body does. When you go full speed all the time it's hard on a person. Even machines need to take a rest sometimes or they'll break down.

I just don't want to be an old man someday thinking back on things and wishing I'd have done more. I can't let that happen. Because that day is coming whether I'm ready or not. I'll have time to sit and do nothing when that day comes. I can't have very many of those days right now.

By the end of January I’m pretty wore out. I usually take 3-4 weeks off, then start getting excited about the next season!

You don't have to hunt. So don't go when you don't want to. I'm bad about feeling like I "have" to go if I have the time. I'm 34, married with 4 young kids, and work a ton of hours. I'm definitely starting to skip some weekends just because i'm worn out and need the rest. And I'm ok with that. Wife sure likes me being home more.

The problem is when your financially invested in something so heavily you feel like an idiot not going. The way leases are these days that pretty much is how it goes.

I'm usually burned out by mid December. I start out for 2 to 3 weeks in September Elk hunting. Then start bow hunting the lease in October. It's a 6 hour drive to the lease. I spend my off days at the lease until mid December. I work the last 2 weeks of December this year so it works out ok.. I'll do a little squirrel hunting next couple of months..

I guess it depends how bad your level of OCD is. I had a friend that was like this with tourney fishing, he had it bad then started to say it felt like a 2nd job and lost the passion completely. He hasn’t made a cast for a bass since the 90’s, hung it up completely.

For me it all boils down to the hassle of doing something. Once it becomes one big hassle its over (in my fun book). I have to keep it fun and remember it was never meant to be a competition or to be over complicated.

When you are hunting to make money instead for pleasure then it is a job not a hobby.
