I worked holidays for about 8 yrs hauling crude and delivering oil to ships. Got tired of it and changed companies. First time off and enjoying it.

Hanging out at the firebarn with my extended family. Don't have to work very many Christmases but sure don't mind when I do. Some of the families come to the station when they're able so we still get to have some fun with the kiddos. My kids are older so we'll see how much junk food, ice cream and sodas we can feed to the little ones! Good play time and see how wired we can get em!

I was a police officer on Christmas for 37 years. I worked about 27 of those. The ones I did not work was just by being lucky on my regular days off. Although I had seniority, I refused to use my vacation during Christmas. I did not have children and did not want to deprive others being home if I could work in their place. If someone requested, I would trade days off that week even if I was scheduled to be off.

I also learned that from one of my supervisors. He did not deer hunt but knew how important opening weekend was to those that do. He usually had seniority on the shift so was off on weekends. He always came in and worked the weekend of the opening of deer season so that any other supervisor that hunted (most) could at least make the opening. He would ask a year in advance when opening weekend was (including archery if necessary) so that he could make plans on being there.

But for first time since Christmas 1983…. I am retired!!

And the other supervisor that I was talking about, retired six weeks after me.
