    Muzzleloader

Whats legal on private land and national forest land for muzzleloader.
The way I read the outdoor annual for my county its same rules as bow season for legal game.
The WMA's I usually hunt limit legal game to spikes and does, but for private land and regular national forest I don't see those limits.

Unless muzzleloader is considered a special late season.

As far as I know on private land it goes by the season dates of that county.

When it comes to national land, I can only speak for Sam Houston, which follows the counties the property is in.

Muzzle loader season is a special season....spikes and does public or private. Maybe be different for MLD..

Muzzleloader is not "Special Late Season". Private land and NF should be follow the County bag limits.

You have a picture of special late season, which is not the same as muzzleloader season. Some north/central texas counties have special late season (doe/spike only) and some east/southeast texas counties have muzzle loader where you can shoot >13" bucks. These two season run concurrent.

I agree it was stupid for them to change the name of late doe/spike season to "special" especially since they changed the definition of a spike in the hand book to just 1 unbranched antler and not 2 slicks.

then why does is say "spikes and does only"?

North zone shows "special late season". I see no "special late season" specifically listed; except Muzzleloader..
                Special Late
                North Zone Jan. 3 - 16, 2022
                South Zone Jan. 17 - 30, 2022
None of the counties I see show "Special Late Season" as a time period.
So to me, they are saying "Muzzle Loader" is THE "Special Late Season".
                Muzzleloader
                Jan. 3 - 16, 2022
Muzzle loader runs the exact same time period as "Special Late Season"

                  It depends on the county.

I'm in Houston County, I can shoot spikes, does and either one of my bucks during ML. Our season opens the 3rd and runs till the 16th. Concurrent with the second youth season

I believe in those spike and doe season counties any weapon is legal for spikes and does only

Always been under the impression that muzzle loader was limited to does and spikes.
I've posed the question at TPW. We'll see what an official answer is.

I am glad this was brought up, I have been wondering the same thing.

From what I am understanding.....Quackerbox, I am in San Jacinto County and it reads the same as Houston County.

I read it no different than our Archery Season, therefore, if we have not taken any deer at all, we can take: Deer Limit; one 1- 13" Buck, one unbranched antler Buck and Two Does....correct?

In my case, I have taken my one unbranched antler Buck, therefore, I may take my remaining Deer as mentioned above...Correct?

I'm going by the rulebook. The only specific we have in regards to ML is this:

Antlerless deer may be taken by hunting license tag during archery, muzzleloader, and youth-only seasons, except on properties where antlerless MLDP tags have been issued then take is by MLDP tag only. Antlerless deer may also be taken by hunting license tags during designated periods in the General Season, see General Season section below for specific dates.

Here is what is written on the Sam Houston Legal Game pdf -

Muzzleloader: Jan. 3-16 (either sex, buck must have at least one unbranched antler). No USFS Antlerless Deer Permit required.

Here is what's written for Milam county -

                          North Zone

Bag Limit 4 deer, no more than 2 bucks, and no more than 2 antlerless, all seasons combined.

Antler Restrictions The bag limit in this county is two legal bucks, but only ONE may have an inside spread of 13 inches or greater. A legal buck deer is defined as a buck deer with: at least one unbranched antler; OR an inside spread of 13 inches or greater (does not apply to a buck that has an unbranched antler). A hunter may also take ONE buck with an inside spread of 13 inches or greater in a different county with antler restrictions, and not to exceed that county's bag limit.

Antlerless Deer: Antlerless deer may be taken by hunting license tag during archery, muzzleloader, and youth-only seasons, except on properties where antlerless MLDP tags have been issued then take is by MLDP tag only. Antlerless deer may also be taken by hunting license tags during designated periods in the General Season, see General Season section below for specific dates.

MLDP: If MLDP buck tags have been issued for a property, harvest is by MLDP tag only and all bucks must be tagged with a MLDP tag. If MLDP antlerless tags have been issued for a property, harvest is by MLDP tag only and all antlerless deer must be tagged with a MLDP antlerless tag. The landowner or designated agent are responsible for providing MLDP tags to the hunters on MLDP properties. All hunters using MLDP tags are required to possess a Resident or Non-resident General hunting license.

                          Muzzleloader Jan. 3 - 16, 2022

The muzzleloader Jan 3 to 16 is a season on to itself, so should be fine to shoot Buck or antlerless deer. But to be safe, call the Game Warnder for the County you're planning on hunting in.

                            MUZZLELOADER:

Old Indian word meaning- bad hunter that couldn’t kill deer in the first 3 months of hunting season.

Do you enjoy shooting the bow? In a season all by yourself?
I like shooting muzzle loader...in a season by myself. We could cut into General season for ML only season, or maybe even into Archery season.
