    Calling small engine experts!!

    I have a Briggs 5500w generator that died on me last Saturday at camp. Check fuel. good. Check oil. Good. Drop carb bowl, no water. Check plug. No spark. Replace plug. No spark. Replace coil, no spark. Disconnected coil ground. No spark. Magnet on flywheel is strong. Confirmed coil gap. No spark. I have put on 2 new coils on this machine. No freaking spark.

    Any ideas?

    Check the switch and ground on the kill circuit. It has to break the ground to have fire.

      If you’ve done all those things I’d look at the switch.

        Sounds like some kind of safety shutoff. Check and see if you have an oil level shutoff. I had one on my water transfer pump and if it was not setting level or was low on oil, it would shut off the spark.

          How are you checking spark? It sounds like you are doing pretty good. Typically, I would say you have a carb problem as a result of leaving common fuel in the tank and carb for months. The fuel we have now days, will cause all types of problems, if you leave it in a fuel system for months. I usually find the needle is stuck in the seat or the main jet or some other circuit in the carb is plugged. But you are saying you have no spark, and it sounds like you have done everything that you should do, to check the spark.

          The reason why I ask about how you are checking the spark, is those small engines have weak coils, the spark will only jump a small gap, it's not like an automotive ignition. You need to have the spark plug grounded to the engine, when cracking, then watch the spark across the plug gap. You should have a decent blue spark. But those ignitions won't produce a spark that will jump an inch or more, like an automotive ignition system.

              Generator has been running all year at camp. Not a fuel issue. I have all electrical disconnected from coil. Grounding plug to block. Hell I can hold the wire and spin.

                A business card is a perfect “tool” to set the gap on the coil to the flywheel. I have had experiences in the past where the engine has to have a good spin before a spark would be visible. Just a few things to think about.

                  Yeah. I used the business card guide. Found some stuff online that made me tighten the gap a lil more. We are just hand spinning, but we have Price is Righted the flywheel and still nothing.


                  Really at a complete loss. It shouldn't be this difficult. It's going to be something dumb/simple, but we have double and triple checked everything...I think.

                      Sometimes the the low oil sensor can go bad and the engine will not start no matter what you do. I was about to throw my Ryobi generator away last year due to me fixing everything I thought I could fix and it still wouldn’t start. I switched out that sensor and it started right up. Good luck

                          Just for grins, I just went out and put a drill on the flywheel to make sure spin was fast enough. It did have a lil fire. put plug back in, starter fluid, nothing. Gonna keep playing. Will report back

                              Does the fly wheel need some sand paper on it to knock off the rust? Had this happen to mower engine before that wasn’t getting spark
