Converting 700 extractor to M16 style question:

    Converting 700 extractor to M16 style question:

    I have a Model 700 Ti in 7 RSAUM and need to have the riveted extractor replaced. Again. My local gunsmith doesn't work on those, but installs the M16 style extractor instead.

    I think some material will have to be removed from inside the barrel to accommodate the extractor.

    I only handload for this rifle, well all of my rifles actually. Am I going to have to start over with my handloads like setting the should back, the seating depth, and will it change my headspace any? I've never had an M16 style installed on any 700 and am trying to decide if the cost of $120 plus the kit is going to be more trouble than its worth or do I find a different gunsmith that will install a new riveted extractor?

    This is one of, if not the most accurate rifle I own and I have 200 rounds loaded for it now. I'd hate to have to pull the bullets and start over.

    Yes, the M16 or Sako extractor is better. Having said that, VERY few Remington extractors give trouble. I've owned, and traded through dozens of 700's in the past 40 years and have had exactly one that had to have the extractor replaced, and i did it myself.
    Having the extractor replaced won't change your bolt's position in the rifle, regardless of the type you choose to replace it with. $120 isn't a bad price for that work.

      Has that action/bolt been trued? This should not impact OAL, the only thing I would worry about is the bolt face/bushing, but I have never had this done, so no first-hand experience. I am guessing you are worried about the bolt face as well, hence the questions, I bet a smith can weigh in and they can set the headspace exactly the same. The only barrel work needed is enough clearance for the claw to rotate.

      I am not sure exactly how sloppy factory rem bolts are these days, the way that bushing is cut is going to be the key and I would guess you will see some change, however minor, given all that is done for this setup.

        The action/bolt has never been trued. I bought his gun new and the handloaded 140 TTSX shots nearly into the same hole. It's an amazingly accurate rifle, so I never felt the need to true the action.

          This will be my second extractor replacement. I'm not sure what's causing the extractor to go bad, but it's happened.
