Thanks. I really like that country around Belle Fourche and Sturgis. I hunt east of Rapid a ways out on the prairie. Beautiful country and super fun spot and stalk. Congrats on the archery buck.

Drew another deer tag in SD this year and I’m heading home with an old muley. The rut is on and bucks are chasing all over. I saw at least a dozen bucks yesterday, but the only ones I could get close to in the morning to were smaller and younger bucks. All were with or chasing does.

In the afternoon I could see some deer come over the ridge about a 1/2 mile away and I went down and around to the other side of a section of stubble to get below where I thought they were headed. The wind was blowing 25mph and I snuck up a fence line and sat on the field edge as the sun was starting to go down. I could see doe ears and antler tips above the stubble going back and forth and then this buck chased a doe right in front of me at 40 yrds. Heaviest deer I’ve ever killed. Didn’t have a scale but prob 250+ lbs. Cool old buck with a broken beam and multiple broken tips.

My boy dropped a nice muley doe yesterday in SD with a kids mentor license. 250 yd shot after a 1+ hr stalk over 1/4 mile. Only had to pick a few cactus thorns out of his pants/socks. Also stopped by the Badlands.

I worked for a year in ND and MT. It’s amazing how little cover it takes to hide several deer. I could be up and down the right-of-way several times a day and not see anything, but about an hour before dark they would drift out of that skinny cover into the open. Makes for some tough hunting conditions. Congrats on your success !
