Interviewed a few last week for a corporate position and the one guy that showed in dockers and a button up was scratched since everyone else was business professional. He was not great but if a close call I would prefer to be better dressed.

In my years of law-enforcement, I have gone to, been on and been in charge of (as commanding officer) interview boards for internal position such as investigator, narcotics, dog handler, SWAT, etc.

In a 130 officer Police Department, everybody knows everybody (except rookies and they can’t apply for the position anyway) and very likely has worked closely at one time with the person being interviewed.

We don’t expect much from another officer but he better not show up with cut offs and a tank top. Business casual, if neat, was certainly acceptable and nobody was graded down for not having a suit. A few people however, showed up with a full suit. in our position maybe they were overdressed but they sure didn’t lose any points and some interviewers might’ve actually gave them a bump for going the extra effort when they knew it was not needed.

When I interviewed for Dallas PD, I showed up in boots, jeans, and a dress shirt. Everybody else had a suit on. When I went in, in front of 7 captains and lieutenants, one of them stood up and said, “is this job important to you”, I said yes, he said, “ then why did you show up in boots and jeans”, I said, this is because what I wear to church. I got hired.

Interviewed folks for 35 yrs. Never hired a shabby dressed person.

Men- Nice clothes, but unpolished shoes revealed a lot about a person. Chair posture is also revealing.

Women- strong perfume and sleazy, low cleavage dresses didn't make the cut either.
I wasn't looking for someone to work with Miss Kitty in the Long Branch and I wasn't trying to ignite the "rut" in the workplace.

You get one shot for a first impression… I always consider how someone is dressed. However, we are in front of Clients a lot. Sloppiness doesn’t cut it… for those that say a resume speaks for itself…. No, they don’t… It’s only paper! That is just to get door opened, it’s now time to sell. My .02, suit and tie for every interview.

I'm old school and interviewed and been interviewed plenty of times. You won't go wrong in suit or coat and tie for that position. Personally, I wouldn't dress down further than coat and tie. Your dress says a lot about you as well as respect for the people interested in talking to you.

Last interview I went to in scrubs

In my defense I did not think I was going to an interview, thought it was just to meet the person over the department that my SIL worked for for a potential future position

Talked 30min and was offered the job

But like I said, was not communicated as an interview

Cargo shorts, crocs and a tuxedo shirt. That way you're letting your future employer know "I'm formal but I'm here to party."

Dress shirt and shoes, slacks, and a tie, with a fresh shave and haircut secured my new job this year.
