Scope recommendations

My son is looking to buy a scope for a rifle. Wants a good scope but not break the bank (up to $600 or so). Looking for a 44mm or 50mm objective and something greater than 10 power and up to 16 power or so. He has been researching some of the vortex and Leupold scopes. Anyone have any suggestions or input?

Leopold,or Burris..I know a lot of guys brag on Vortex but the one I had moved everytime you pulled the trigger..Sent it back,and they sent me a new one.I gave it to my nephew..That was 10 years ago,or more.
